PNEUMATIC POST DESPATCH.-The Se?
cretary of the Navy visited the Broad?
way underground railway, corner War?
ren street, N. T., on Thursday. The
pneumatic postal despatch was set in
motion, and a large mail of letters and
newspapers was sent through the tubes
by. air pressure , at a velooity of sixty
three miles an hour. The rapidity with
which tho letters shoot into the re?
ceiving-box is said to be so great that
they are soaroely visible, and the faot of
their transmission is hardly realized
until they are seen emerging from the
hopper.nt the bottom of the box. These
postal pipes are intended to be laid
under the streets, in connection with the
present lamp-post letter-boxes, in such a
manner that ?hen letters are deposited
in the boxes they fall down into the air
tubes and are instantly swept along to
ibo post office, or sub-post office, thus
saving all delays. The Secretary then
entered the pneumatic passenger car,
with a distinguished party ol ladies and
gentlemen, and rode back and forth, for
a couple of miles orso, under Broadway.
It is said he was much pleased with his
novel experience of atmospheric railway
riding under the groat thorough-fare of
New York.
JEM MACH IN SHAKSPEARE.-The latest
dramatic sensation in New York is the
introduction of a prize-fighter in tho
splendid Shakspearean comedy "As You
Like lt." Jem Mace, the pugilist, ap?
pears as Oharles the wrestler, and it is
found that more people go to see him
than to witness tho play. During the
soene in which he figures, tho sensation,
we are assured, causes "little shrieks
from the ladlee," and the triumph of tho
champion was greeted with "a ripple of
gloved applause throughout tho house."
On Tuesday, at special meeting of
Common Council of Philadelphia, the
ordinanoe establishing a paid fire depart?
ment was passed by a vote of thirty-four
to twelve. Tho council amended the
original draft of the bill, by providing
that no fire.oommissioner shall hold any
Federe!, State, or municipal office during
bia torra, by striking out the appropria?
tion of $400,000 for the lease and pur
obase of apparat&s, and authorizing the
commissioners to lease said apparatus
for three year?.
Over-fifty, New York street car con?
ductora have been arrested this week for
withholding part of the fares they col
leot. Women were employed os "spot?
ters" to detect them.
