Yet tho ceaporto of this great empire are on tho Baltic, amidst the Northern iee, and unless she can obtain a door to out sido commorco through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles, her progress is greatly impeded. Possession of Con? stantinople would givo her command of these subjects. The strits, usually call? ed the Hellespont, connect tho Mediter? ranean Sea with the Sea of Marmora. At ita mouth are four strong Turkish forts, named the Dardanelles, and hence the straits ate sometimes called by that nciz^c Tli-y "rc thi^y Hni^es fong, and from bali a mile io a mile ??U u half in width, and lined with heavy batteries. The inland Sea of Mamora, to which they lead, io 180 miles in length, and sixty in breadth. On its Northern shore you enter the Straits of the Bosphorus, and a short distance up those straits, on the European side, is Constantinople. The Straits of the Bosphorus, which aro about fifteen miles long, and perhaps half a mile of average width, connect the Sea of Marmora with the Euxine or BlaokSea, that great inland ocean, which is, from West to East, 700 miles long, and in breadth 800. Into this vast ex? panse empty those mighty Bussian rivers, the Dnieper, the Dniester, and the Don, through which navigation is opened to almost the whole of Russia. All her great navigable rivers flow into that sea, and thenoe through the Bos phoroB, the Marmora, and tho Helles? pont into the Mediterranean. This brief sketch shows why it is Russia has no long sought Constantinople. It is to obtain command of the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles. "The Dardanelles," said the Emperor Alexandes I. ''are the keys of my boase. Let mo get them, and my power is irresistible." "Thc possession of Constantinople," said Na po!?on I. "gives Russia tho dominion of the world." "Once mistress of Cou stantinoplo," said tho Emperor tc O'Meara, "Russia gets all the commerce of the Mediterranean, becomes n greal naval power, marches off to India at army of 70,000 good soldiers, ant Heaven knows what moy happen. The anxiety with which England con templates the encroachments of Rnssii has been exhibited by the sensation pro doced even by GrortchakofFs late reason able demand. It arises from the convie tion that Constantinople is the ulterio object, and that tho possession of th Dardanelles would give to Ru6ssia th means of creating and organizing ai almost unlimited marine, uud woul enable her to prepare armaments in th Black Sea, without Europe having th means of preventing or even of discc yering her designs. She would be ubi to defend ber whole Southern empire b a single impregnable fortress, and th road to India would be open to ber, wit all Asia at her back. Thus, it is mot plain that before she is permitted to ac compliBh that object, there will be a wc in Europe on such a scale as the worl hos rarely seeu.-Baltimore Sun.
