More than 1,000,000 of acres were given away for railroads and wagon roads. The total shown a quantity greater by 429,261 acres than that "disposed of" the previous year. The amount received for all this vast quantity of land "die posed of" is $8,668,518.90- "a sum less by SS09,372. SO ?.Lari was received the previous year." If any abuse of the affairs of the United States Government could excite m uah new dissatisfaction, we think this might occasion some oom Slaint. Bnt abuso is the order of the av in all Government matters, and it is only subject of surprise now when any? thing right is seen in the condnot of its affairs. 8,000,000 acres of the people's iand gone, and 2,000,000 of it only sold! The annual amonnt now paid ont as pendons by the Government of the United States, is $27,780,811.81. There were on the pension rolls of the Govern? ment June 30, 1870, 198,686 pension? ers. Daring the last year, 24,766 were added to the' list, and 7,498 were dropped from it. Secretary Cox repre? sents that Very, active measures have been taken to correct and prevent frauds in this pension business. But as only 7,498 were dropped from all causes, and nearly 25,000 were added to it, we in? cline to the belief that the "active mea? sures" of Mr. -Cox have been met by equally aotive measures on the other side of the line.
