?which exempta "promissory notes for a

Tko law as it now stands, divested of its
verbiage, is as follows: The tax on
checks, drafts or orders drawn at sight
or on demand remains unchanged, viz:
Two counts when drawn for any sum
whatever npon any bank or trust compa?
ny, and a like amount when drawn "for
any sam exceeding ten dollars upon any
other person or persons, companies or
corporations." Bills of exchungo (in?
land,) draft or order, for the payment of
any sum of . money not exceeding $100,
otherwise than at Bight or on demand,
or any promissory noto (for a Jess sum
than 9100.) are exempted from stamp on
and after the 1st of October, 1870.^ Evi?
dences of debt such as "I. O. U. $100,"
"due you $100," usually called "due
bills," dr'promissory notes to "pay at
sight," are reliable (as in the first para?
graph above) to the two cent stamp duty.
COTTON TN RUSSIA.-It is rather sur?
prising to learn that Russia has GG7
cotton factories, employing 180,900 ope?
ratives. Before the war, iu this coun?
try, cotton manufacture had scarcely
commenced in Russia. During that
period, however, tho Russians began to
manufacture Bokhara, Persian, Indian
and other cotton, and it is said that their
factories are now the most magnificent in
tho world, exceeding in 6tylo and com?
pleteness even tho English establish?
ments. The products amount to
$50/000,000 annually.
Some few weeks ago, a young man
from the interior of Kentucky died of
the prevailing epidemic at New Orleans.
Hin brother went on to convey tho re?
mains home for burial, was there taken
siok with the samo disease, and died,
also; and then the father of the two went
to bring their bodies home, and he, too,
was also stricken with tho fever and died.
