A private letter, from a ?reliable citizen
of Bu ni ter, dated Novo mbor 10, says:
1 'An armed band of twenty-five negroes
attacked1 the j premises of Mr. Hosea

night bet'oro lest, and deliberately set
tiro to. his barn, and burnt it to the
ground. Tho barn contained some 600
or 80fj( buineis;qf. corn and other provi?

son Baw the ruffians, at their work, but
waa powerless to pro vent them. Tho
only reasonwhich can be imagined for
this outrage is, that it was done in reta?
liation, for tho recent whipping of a
negro trader in seed cotton by a band of
men?t or near Lynchburg. But Mr.
Wilson, the party made to suffer in this
instance, -, is an old man of well-known
habits, opposed to violence, and abont
the last to bo suspected of participation
in any night riding or other perform?
ances of such oharaoter."
A FATAL MISTAKE.-We are grieved to
learn of a painful accident that occurred
at a place about three miles North of
Whiteville, on last Friday night, by
whioh a vety worthy gentleman was ac?
cidentally snot and killed by his son.
The circumstances are briefly these: At
about 1 o'clock of the night above men?
tioned Mr. R. H. Brown, the principal
of a school near Whiteville, hearing a
noise among the fowls in an out-house,
called to his son, T. M. Brown, a lad
about nineteen years of age, to get his
gan and go out there, as he thought that
an owl had got after the ohickens. At
the same time, and without the young
man's knowledge, Mr. Brown himself
went oat to the fowl-house and began
feeling there for the owl. The lad ap?
proached, and seeing an object moving
there, fired his gun, tho entire load of
which entered Mr. Brown's left shonlder,
killing him almost instantly.

COLUMBIA HOSPITALITY.-The citizens
of Columbia were "on hospitable cares
intent" during the whole of last week,
and exerted themselves to the ntmost to
give a worthy entertainment to the busy
thousands v?ho thronged the thriving
capital. AU the arrangements connected
with the State Fair were excellent. The
grand ball of the South Carolina Club
was a model of refined taste, courteous
care and skillful management. And the
dinner provided for the delegates to the
State Survivors' Association was a fine
example of bounteous cheer, coupled
with a cordial and generous greeting.
A host of pleasant memories remain
with those who had the good fortune to
visit Columbia daring the State Fair.

RICHMOND CITY ELECTION.-We have
triumphed 1 And, under all the difficul?
ties we have had to encounter, the tri?
umph is one of which tho Conservatives
may well be proud. Our party were not
united. For reasons with whioh our
citizens are familiar, and some of whioh
it would give us pain to refer to, our
ticket lost hundreds of Conservative
votes; while the African ticket lost not a
single vote. Succuss, under all the cir?
cumstances, proves that Richmond is
hereafter safe from the dutches of Radi?
calism. Let ns give thanks to the firm
Conservatives who rose superior to self?
ish and minor considerations, and gave
us the victory.-Richmond Enquirer.
THE NEW YORK ELECTION.-Returns
indicate that Governor Hoffman went
out of the city with a majority of 52,037
on a vote of 140,835, with a registration
of 112,666. Two years ago his majority
was 68,850. Mayor Hall's majority over
Ledwith falls 28,000 short of Governor
Hoffman, ^mounting to only 33,811.
Complete returns from missing districts
give the following figures: Vote of the
city for Governor Hoffman, 86,561;
Woodford, 34,472. For Mayor-Hall,
71,298; Lodwith, 46,217.
