The Chairman then stated that the
Convention was ready to proceed to busi?
ness.
On motion, a committeo, consisting of
ono delegate from each society, was ap?
pointed to nominate permanent officers
of the Convention. Messrs. Stanley,
Moorman, Hoyt and Mauldin were ap?
pointed.
?The committee reported tho following:
For President, T. S. Moorman; for Sec?
retary, F. P. Beard.
Tho call for the Convention was then
read by the Seoretary.
The question of organization waa tuen
discussed, and a communication from
Mr. A. Kalstrom, of Charleston, read,
and received as information. After well
disoussing the merits of the different
orders of temperance organizations, the
Convention decided that the "Sons of
Temperance" was, in its opinion, the
best.existing order.
On motion, a committee, consisting of
Messrs. Pritchard, Troy and Stanley, was
appointed to confer with Major B. D.
Townsend, of Society Hill, in regard to
the organization of tho "Sons of Tem?
perance" in this State.
The following resolution was then
unanimously adopted:
Resolved, That it is the sense of this
Convention that it is important to tho
advancement of tho cause of temperance
that Juvenile Total Abstinence Societies
be formed throughout the State, and
that we pledge ourselves, as members of
this Convention, to nse our utmost en?
deavors to raise such organizations in
the several communities in which wc re?
side.
It was then moved that the Conven?
tion resolve itself into a permanent or
fanimation, to be known as the State
'emperanoo Sooiety, which was adopted.
On motion, a committeo was appoint?
ed to nominate two vice-Presidents and
a Corresponding Secretary.
The committee reported as follows:
For 1st vice-President, C. D. Stanley;
for 2d Vioe-President, D. L. Boozer; for
Corresponding Seoretary, F. P. Beard.
It waa theu moved that tho different
societies represented in this Convention
be requested to have quarterly addresses
whenever it is practicable.
The following r?solution was then
passed:

mend the Temperance Advocate to the
earnest consideration of all friends of
temperance.

meet again subject to the call of thc

AFFAIRS IN UNION.-A friend writes as
follows, under date of Union C. H., No?
vember 14:
There is every indication that wo are
to have trouble in this vicinity.
There are two negro companies here
armed and equipped for battle.
Last Saturday night about 150 negroes
assembled one milo from this place and
fired several volleys. A picket of fivo
negro men was posted at Thomas
Hughes' gate. Hughes becoming alarm?
ed, reported the matter to the officers in
command of the garrison. A lieutenant
took a Bquad of soldiers and went to
Hughes'. The picket challenged the
party; the former, however, were arrest?
ed and brought to town; whereupon the
Captain released them, and (as I have
learned) upon the ground that they be?
longed to the militia.
Lost night some persons throw rocks
at Thomas Hughes' house, and also at
William Faucett's. Faucett made his
escape; after whioh, the parties attncking
approached tho house and Bwore if Fau?
cett was within, they would burn the
house down.
Last night, also, some persons fired
two balls inio John H. Gallman's house,
one of whioh came very uear the head of
a little girl asleep. Mr. Gallman lives
two miles from this place, and a moro
worthy and peaceable citizen lives not in
South Carolina. Tho train has como,
and therefore I must close.
Yesterday morning the large transier
houso of tho New York Central Railroad
Company, in East Buffalo, was destroy?
ed by a supposed incendiary fire, to?
gether with 300 empty cars, involving a
loss of $600,000.
Tho Chora?, Democrat announces the
commitment for trial of tho Kev. R. J.
Donaldson, Alfred Peeto, Jno. MoCulla
and Aaron Plyler, who aro charged with
stuffing the ballot-boxes at tho late elec?
tions.
