TH? HONEST.-The monkey is a ha?
man being, a little, undersized, kivered
with hair, hitched to a tail, and filled
with the deyil.
Naturalists will tell you, if you ask
them, that I am mistaken ; that I mean
well enuff, and don't moan to deceive
ennybody, but the monkey is not a hu?
man being; he is simply a pun on hu?
manity, a kind ov malishus joke ov Ju?
piter's, a libel, with a long tail tew it, a
misterious mixtur of ludicrous mischief
and stale humor, a kind ov pacing hob
byhoss. or connekting gang-plank be?
tween man in biz dignity nud thc beast
in biz darkness.
I hav a hi opinyuu of the naturalist
and all kinds ov tho dictionary fraterni?
ty, and tuch mi hat to them when we
meet, and I respect them for what tha
know, but don't worship them for what
tha don't know, as the heathens do thara
wooden goode.
I don't kare what the philosophers say
tha kan prove in this matter, I tell you
confidecshally, my Christian friend, you
and the monkey are relashnus.
X don't pretend tow say that you arc
brothers and sisters, but I do pretend
tew state that monkeys, or cn ny othei
kind ov critters, who exercise roason,
even if the light ov it iz nz dim nz n
number six dip caudle in the rays ov thc
noonday SUD, are our relashnus, for a
certain amount.
The only fence between tho animal
and brute folks iz instinkt and reason,
and if tho muralist kant prove that the
monkey don't show a single glimmering
of reason, I say ho must step oph from
the monkey's tail, and lot him eat at thc
fust table.
The monkey iz imitative tew the high
esl degree, and imitushun iz a direk!
transgreshun ov the law ov iustiukt, anc
iz'fallow ground within the domain o^
reason.
Instinkt don't step one single ster
aside tew smell ov a flower or pull a cat'i
tail.
Bat argument ain't mi fighting weight
I git along the best by asserting thing:
az they strike me, and I say upwnrds oi
4,000 things every year that I kau'
prove onny more than I kan prove wha
melody iz.
The naturalists may hav their owi
way, but they kant hav mine; what lit t li
i know about things haz been whisperec
tew me by the spirits ov some othe
romping critters, and iz az distinkt anc
butiful, sometimes tew me nz a drean
on an empty stummak, it may be al
wroDg but it never iz vicious, aud thus
konklude it iz ed?kaskun.
Now i don't advino ennybody else te\
depend for. their learning upon sich prc
karious school-masters, tho best way i
tew follow the ruts, it will take you te\
town just az it did yare daddy.
The route that i travel iz cirkuitus nm
blind sometimes, it has now nud then
vista, or a landscapo in it, that iz worth
tow me, more than a farm ov tillabl
land, but you kant raise good white bean
on o- landscape.
Whenever i drop mi subject, and beg!
tew strut in tho subourbs of scntimei
tility and proverbial pomposity, i alwu
think ov a gobble turkey, in a bari
yard, on dress parade, cud that iz j h
what i am thinking ov now, and then
fore i will dismount from the turkey au
get aboard the monkey, (the monkey r
he am,) once more.
Pure deviltry iz the monkey's rigl
bower; he iz only valuable (as person:
property) tew look at, and wonder win
he iz goiog tew do next.
He iz a jack at all trades; put him i
a barber ship, ho will lather, and try te
shave himself, and color his mustasl
put him in a dri goods store, and 1
will handle more goods than the best r
tail clerk in A. T. Stewart's employ.
The monkey haz not got a logik
head; it iz tew much like a pin-hen
all in a heap to oust, but his face iz
concentrated dew drop and malishu
mischief.
He resembles the rat-terrier in cou
tenanco and scratches biz head nz n
taral nz a district skool boy, aud u
doubtedly for the same reason.
Monkeys never grow euny older
expreshun, a yung monkey looks j
like hiz grandpapa, melted up and bo
again.
They are sometimes kept as pets, b
I should rather watch two adopted c
pb an boys fresh from tho Home of t
Friendless, than two monkeys.
They will eat every thing that a m
will, except bolony sausage, here th
show more instinct than reason.
But after all, tho the monkey sho
ovident signs ov reason, they uro a:
means practical grace, the most usel
kritters i hav ever pondereel over a
scratched my bed about.
They won't work, and they won't ph
unless they can raizo sum devil, they i
too mutch like a human being in loc
and actions to kill off, it iz imposai!
tew gaze at ono and git mad at him, a
it iz impossiblo lew luff ut their smi
ing satanity, without getting mad
yourself.
If ennybody should make me a p
sent ov a monkey i don't know now w
thor I should konsider it intended
malice, or a joke, but i do know tin
should send him back bi tho samo \
son that fetched him, tow the don
markod in loud italics-C. O. D.
In konklusion: thara izonly ono th
that i have a grate supply ov do
about, in referenco tow tho monkey, i
that is his moral stamina, while in
gardon ov Eden, with the rest of
critters, previous to tho timo that Ac'
fell-was he strictly on tho square,
was he just as full ov the devil as li
now?
Au auswor to the above konundrnc
earnestly^ solicited.
KONTENTMENT.-Kontentmeut is
gift OT God. as it kan be cultivated a lit?
tle, but it. ls bard tow acquire. Kontout*
moot i? said tobo tho'same as bapp?a?s?^
this aokonnts Tor tue' amau ?moant x>v
happiness laying around loose, without
enoy owner. I don't believe that man
waz made tow be kontented, nor happy
in this world, for if he had bin, ne
wouldn't har hankered ennff for the
other world.
When a man gita perfektly kontented,
ho and a clam are fust couzins.
Kontentruent iz a kind ov moral lazi?
ness; if ibero want ennythiug but kon?
tentment in this world, man wouldn't be
any moro ov a suckcess than au angle?
worm iz.
When a man gits so that he don't want
onnything more, he iz like n rackcoou,
with his intestines full ov green corn.
Kontentment iz one nv the instinkts,
i admit it tew bo happiness, but it iz a
kind ov spruce gum chawing happiness.
We all lind fault with Adam and Eve.
for not being kontented, but if they had
biu satisfied with the gardiu ov Eden,
and themselfs, they would have been liv?
ing tharo now, thc only two human be?
ings on the face ov the urth, az innocent
as a couple ov vegetable oysters.
They would hav biu two splendid spe?
cimens of the handy work of God, ele?
gant portraits in the vest?bulo ov heaven,
but they wouid not bav developed rea
zon, tho only God-like attribute in man.
When a mau ii thoroly kontented, he
iz either too lazy to want ennythiug, or
too big a phool tew enjoy it.
I hav lived in uaberboods where overy
boddy seemed to be kontented, but if
the itch had ever broke out in them na
berhoods, the people would haveskratch
ed to this doy.
I am in favour ov all the vanitys, and
petty ambishums, all tho jealousys, and
backbittings in tho world, not bekauzo I
think they am ban-some, bekau?e I thine
the}' stir up men, und wimmin, get
them onto their muscle, cultivating their
venom, and rcazon at the same time, aud
proving what a brilliant cuss mau may
be, at the same time that it proves what
a miserable cuss he iz.
I had rather seo two wimmiu pull hair,
than tew seo them set down, thoroughly
satisfied with an aimless life, and nover
suffer eney excitement, greater than
bleeding tears together, through their
nose, for a parcel of shirtless heathen, on
the coast ov Madagaskar, or, once in a
while, open their eyes, from a dream of
young u3*8ou kontentment ten, tew sarch
tho allmiukak, for the next chango in
tho moon.
Kontentment iu this age of the world,
either means death, or decay, in the
days ov Abraham kontentment was sim?
ply ignorance.
The world iz now full ov laming, the
arts, and sciences, and all the thousand
appliances ov reuzon, these things make
ignorance the exception, and no man
haz a right tew cultivate kontentment,
euny more than he haz tow cut oph biz
thurn, and .-et quietly down and nuss tho
stub.
Show me a thoroughly kontented per?
son, and i will show yu au useless one.
What we want iz folks who won't be
kontented, who kant bo kouteutcd, who
git up in the morning, not simply to hav
their bed made, but for tho sak^ov git
tiug tired; not for the sake of nourish?
ing kontentment, but for the sake ov put?
ting turpententiue in sum ded place, and
stirring up the animals.
Kouteutmeut was born with Adam, and
died when Adam ceased tow beau angel
and bekum a mau.
I don't say that a man couldn't" be
hatched out, aud, like n young owl, set
ou a dri limb, awl biz days, with biz
branes az fast asleep az .% mud-turkles,
and at last sneak into heaven under the
guizo of kontentment, but i do say, that
10 geueraBhuus ov sich rueu would run
most of the human race into the ground,
and nz base as a currency made out ov
puter ten cent pieces.
I would like, jist az well nz the next
man, tew crawl into- a hole, that jist fit?
ted me, bed fust, and thus shutting out
out all the light, bo konteuted, for i
know how awfully unsoothing the aims
and nmbisbuns ov life are, but this
would only be burying mi few tnllents,
and sacrificing on the ded niter ov kon?
tentment what war given mo to make a
fire or a smudge with.
Tharo aiut no sich thing as koutont
ment and renzon existing together; thoze
who slip out ov tho crowd into sum al?
ley, and pretend thoy aro chawing tho
cud of sweet kontentment, tho verry
best specimens ov them, are no bfetter
than pin cushions stuck full.
They have jist az menny lougiugs az
ennybody, they have ji:it az mauy vices;
their virtews are too often simply a mix
tur ov jealousy and cowardice.
Kontentment is not designed, as a
stiddy bizziness, for the sons ov man,
while on this urth.
j A yeller dogg, with a tin kittie tew his
tale, climbing a hill at a threo-minit
gate, iz a more reasonable spektakle for
me thau a slimy snail, kontented and
happy.
II ARD ox EDITONS.-Soon after Chief
Justico Chase assumed thc gubernatorial
chair in Ohio, bo issued his proclama?
tion appointing a Thanksgiving Day.
To make suro of being orthodox, the
Governor composed his proclamation
almost entirely cf passages from the le??
ble, which he did not desiguato us quo?
tations, presuming that every ono would
recognize them, and admiro tho fitness
of the words as well as his taste in their
selection. Tho proclamanon, meeting
tho oye of a Democratic editor, ho
pounced at once upon it, nud deolarod
that ho had read it boforo-couldn't ex?
actly suy whoro-but ho would take his
oath that it was a down-right plagiarism
from beginning to end. That would
have been a pretty fair joke; but the noxt
day tho Republican oditor carno ont va?
liantly in defence of the Governor, pro?
nounced the charge libellous, and chal?
lenged any man living to produce ono
single lino of tho proclamation that had
ever appeared in print before.

An Irishman, who was troubled with

Au eloquent orator proposes to grasp

A couutrymau visiting Dartmoor, Eng?

working on the moor, each wearing a ball
and chaiu. no asked ono of them why
that ball was chained to his leg. "To
keep people from stealing it," was the
reply; "there are so many thieves about
here."
One of the amusements at Long

A poor Irishman, seeing a crowd of
people approaching, asked what was the

going to be buried." "Oh!" ho replied,
"I'll stop and see that, for we carry them
