It waa a magnificent sight to seo our
immense boat, accompanied by the Lady
Gay and the Belie of Alton, their decks
crowded with fair ladies and Knights
Templars, bands of mnsio, distinguished
citizens, and invited guests, as they
steamed up the Mississippi, then down
to Jefferson Barracks, where we oil went
on shore to spend a pleasant hour, after
which we again went on board and steam?

commander of the Templars came and
leaned wearily on tho capstan. I turned
to Reuben Milton, and whispered in his
ear these words: "That man was born to
command." He had the form of a Her?
cules, the head of an Apollo, und the
eye of an eagle, and, as circumstances
afterwards demonstrated, the heart of a
lion. Although not so very large, ho
appeared larger than he really was; he
was full and athletic, and still every
proportion was a symmetry and every
movement a grace. While he was still
leaning silently on the capstun, and
while I was yet analyzing his fine coun?
tenance, the captain of the steamer,
with palo lips and blanched cheeks, ap?
proached the young Templar, and, in a
low tone and trembling voice, said :
"Great God I wo are sinking. We are
snagged, air, in the bottom, and nothing
can save us."
..How long can you keep her afloat?"
carelessly inquired the young Templar.
"She may go down in five minutes;
she cannot keep afloat more than fifteen, "
replied the captain.
"Do not make your situation known
to any ono except your crew, or we will
have a panic, and then all will be lost.
Signal the Lady Gay to lay to. None
will notice or understand the signal of
distress. Get your crew and hands ready
to move; I will manage tho rest."
"Blow, Warder, blow," said theyouug

stood near him, at the same time leaping
upon the capstan. Every ono was startled
by a shrill blast from tho warder's trum?

Knights, ladies and gentlemen, on this
boat to make a visit to our friumls on
board the Lady Gay. As the steamers
are rapidly approaching each other, and
cannot bo kept but a minute or two to?
gether, the movement must be a rapid
one. You will form a procession at
once, and as the boats come together
pass over the gangway under an arch of
steel, to the lower deck of Lady Gay.

ordered: "From the rear, right and left
inward wheel, march;" and filing inward,
the Templars rapidly passed over the
gangway to the Lady Gay, the youug
commander being the lost to leave. One
minute more and the Mississippi steamer
sank to the bottom.
SPEND WD3EIIY.-Look most at your
spending. No matter what comes iu, if
more goes oat, you will bo poor. The
art is not in making money, but in keep?
ing it; little expenses, like mice in a
barn, when they are many, make great
waste. Hair by hair the heads get bald;
straw by straw the thatch goes on the
old cottage, and drop by drop the rain
comes into the chamber. A barrel is
soon empty, if the tap leaks but a drop a
minute. When you mean to save, begin
with your youth; there are many thieves
down the red lane. In other things keep
within compass. Never stretch your
legs further than the blanket will reach,
or you will soon be cold. In clothes
choose suitable and lasting stuff, and
not-tawdry flummeries. To be warm is
the main thing, never mind the lookn.
A fool may make money, but it needs a
wise man to spend it. Remember it is
easier to build two chimnies than to keep
one going. If you give all to back and
board, there is nothing left for tho
savings bank. Fare hard and work
hard while yon are young, and you have
a ohance of rest when you are old.
The following rich scene recently
ocenrrod in ono of our courts of justice,
between the judge and a Dutch witness,
all the way from Rotterdam :

"I pe no native."
"What is your mother-tongue?"
"Ich bab no mudder, Mynheer."
"What did you first learn? What
language did you speak in the cradle?"
"I did not speack in tho cradle; I only
cry in Dooen."
