A Tribut? to tue Memory of Leo from lila old CompnnEung lu-Arius. A meeting of Gonfederato officers arni soldiers was held in Richmond on Thurs? day night in tho ' First Presbyterian Church. The edifice was crowded to overflowing. At 7 o'clock Genernl Brad? ley T. Johnson called the meeting to or? der, and upon his motion, General Jubal A. Early was elected temporary Chair? man. General Early, on taking tho chair, paid an eloquent tribute to the memory cf him whom he described as "tho greatest and noblest of men," Ge? neral Robert- E.' Lee. After prayer by Rev. Dr. Min?egerode, General Bradley T. Johnson moved the appointment of the usual committees, ana the motion was carried. The committee on perma? nent organization, after a brief retire? ment, made a report, recommending tho following ns the permauent officers of the association : For President-Jefferson Davis. The report was unanimously adopted amid great applause. Resolutions were then offered by Colo? nel O. S. Venablo providing for the or? ganization of an association for the pur- j pose of erecting a monument to General ? Lee at Richmond. Colonel Venable I spoke in support of his resolution, and ! was seconded by Generals Preston. Gor don and others. In tho course of his speech, Colonel j Venable related the following incident: At 3 o'clock on tho memorable morn ing of the surrender, when our last hope ; seemed to have forsaken us, General Lee sent me forward to the gailaut Gor- : don to know whether he could hold out: longer. I will give General Gordon's ! reply in his own words: "Tell General Lee that my old corps is reduced to ai frazzle, and unless I am supported by j Longstreet heavily I do not think we can do anything more.". I returned to Gene- 1 ral Lee and delivered the message. Ha ! then said: "There is nothing left but to ! go to General Grant, and I would rather i die a thousand deaths." In tho sad and ! tearful consultation that ensued, ono of \ us remarked: "What will history say of i our surrendering Jf there is any possi- 1 bility of our escape? Posterity will not understand it." "Yes, yes," ho rejoined, 1 "they will not understand our situation; ' but that is not the question. Tho qnes- j tion is whether it is right, and if it is j right, I take the responsibility." "Why, when yon aro going to bo hers, sister j begins to sing and get good; she gives j me cake and pie, and everything I want, and she sings so sweetly when you are ' here, and when I speak to her she smiles so pleasantly.
