Starvation, if wo accept tho reports as
true, had already begun to do its work

therefore, charging Bazaine with treason,
seems unjust, if not ridiculous. The
Government leaders justify apprehen?
sions of their own weakuess when they
are driven to acconnt for each successive

averted. The struggle has no longer
even the semblance of ?quality. Now
is the time for Prussia to crown tho pyra-1

that this was a prominent characteristic
of ambitious conquerors. With the fall
of Puris King William may dictate his
own terms, for no other power has the
ability or the inclination to interfere.
The French declaration of a republic has
alarmed all the monarchists of Europe,
and they fear the spread of liberalism
more than the expansion of Prussinn
power. The Czar, as is natural, has al?
ready manifested his sympathy with his
brother autocrat, and William is every?
where in Europe regarded in the light
of doing battle to crush tho republican
sentiment of the old world. Hence he
has the good will of all thc absolutists
and aristocrats. It will be fortunate if
the rank and lile of the successful army
do not find that they bnva been fighting
victoriously for the indefinite postpone?
ment of their own proper meed of con?
stitutional liberty. lu any case, how?
ever, a speedy peace is now the great
need of France, and the sooner her rulers
have the courage to secure it by means
that will leave her the elements of recu?
peration, the better.
