A GOOD Oms FOB SMOKEBS.-An aged
negress, whoso piety hos secured for her
an extensive reputation, in walking her
usual roands of visits, dropped in upon
a neighbor who was equally well known
as a temperance man and a hater of
tobacco.
After being courteously received, the
negress pulled from her pocket a long
pipe, and commenced smoking some very
"union" tobacco, to the infinite disgust
of her host. The man maintained bis
composure several minutes; bnt the
fumes and smoko became too powerful
for bim, and, rising from bis chair, said:
"Aunt Chloe, do you think you aro a
Christian?"
"Yes, br udder, I specks I is."
"Do you believe in the Bible, aunt?"
"Yes, brudder."
"Do you know there is a passage in
the Scriptures which declares that no?
thing unclean shall inherit the kingdom
of Heaven?"
"Yes, I've heard of it."
"Do you believe it?"
"Yes."
"Well, Chloe, you cannot enter the
Kingdom of Heaven, because there is
nothing so nnolean as the breath of a
smoker. What do you say to that?"
"Why, I specks to leave my breff be?

The Boston Bulletin tells this: Old
Judge B-, of New Hampshire, was
what Artemus Ward would have called a
"sociable ouss," off the Bench, and was
noted for claiming acquaintance with
any one whose appearance happened to
please him. Entering a crowded car on
the Boston and Maine Railroad, one
day, his Honor found the only unoccu?
pied seat to be by tho Bide of a smartly
dressed and rather good-looking young
woman. Ascertaining tbut the seat was
not engaged, the Jndgo Bottled himself
comfortably in it, and turning with his
accustomed bland, fatherly smile to his
fair companion, said:
"Your face seems familiar to me, my

"I should think you might," said tho
unknown, in a hoarse, whiskey, contralto
voice, turning a vindictive pair of eyes
on the astonished Judge; "I should
think you might; you Bent me to the
house of correction for threo months,
last winter, you infernal old scoundrel."
The Judge did not press bis claims for
acquaintance any further in that quarter.
A short timo ago, in Delaware County,
a Quaker lady, a maiden who had reached
the age of sixty, accepted the oiler of a
man who belonged to the "world's peo?
ple" and the Presbyterian Church, and
began to prepare for ber wedding. As
usual, u delegation of Friends from her
meeting waited on her, and remonstrat?
ed with her for marrying out of meeting.
The bride elect heard tho visitors pa?
tiently, and said: "Look herel I've been
waiting these sixty years for tho meet?
ing to marry me; and if tho meeting
don't like me to marry out of it, why
don't the meeting bring along its boys?"
That was conclusive, and tho delegation
merely replied "Farewell," and vanished.

spent a winter in Exeter, and of coarse
soon became acquainted with the mu?
sical dilettani of the place. Dining one
day with a professor, the conversation
turned npon Scotch music, and a strong |

man, whom we shall for the present de?
signate the Fiddler, insisting that when
properly played, nothing oould excel it;
thc Professor, on the uiber baud, insist?
ing that it was only fit for a barn-yard.

'I'll lay you a wager of ?5 that if a
party of Scotchmen can bo got together,
I'll make them shed tears ono minute,
sing the next, and dance the third."
"Done," says the Professor; "and if
your music is capable of that, I will not
only pay you tho ?5 with pleasnre, but
will be convinced that it is tho most en?
livening, pathetic and best musio in the
ivorld.
Tho difficulty aroso ns to getting au
opportunity for a trial. But this was
soon obviated by a third party informing
them that a number of young Scotchmen
dined annually at the Old London Hotel,
on the anniversary of Burns' birth-day.
This was a capital opportunity for the
Fiddler; for these young men, being
principally raw-boned and over-grown
Scotch lads, who had recently left their
own country to carry tea in tho neigh?
borhood, were the very ones upon whom
he was sure to make a hit.
AU being now arranged, and the ut?
most secresy being agreed upon, the
eventful day was anxiously looked for.
At length it came; and the Fiddler and
Professor, by an introduction to one of
the party, got an invitation to the dinner.
There were twelve altogether eat down ;
and a right merry party they were. The
Fiddler was not long in perceiving that [
be had got among a right musical set,
and ho waited patiently till they were fit1
for anything. At length he gave a wink
to the Professor, who at once proposed
that his friend should favor them with a
Scotch tune on the violin.
"Capital, capital!" cried the whole
party.
Tho violin was brought, and all were
in breathless anxiety. Tho Fiddler
chose for bis first tune "Hero's health to
them that's nwa," and played it in the
most solemn and pathetic manner.
"That's a waefn' tune," said a great,
big, raw-boned youth, to his next neigh?
bor.
"It is that, Sandy. There's meikle in
that tune, man. It reminds mo o' ano
that's gone;" Jamie at the same time
giving a deep sigh, and drawing his
hand over his long, gaunt face, to bide
the tears which were trickling down his
cheeks.
The Fiddler, with bis keen eye, soon
perceived that before he got through tho
second part of the tune, ho would have
them all in tho samo mood. Ho there?
fore threw his whole soul into the in?
strument, played tho tune as ho had
never done before; and as the last four
bars of tho tune died away like a distant
echo, there was not a dry cheek amongst
the company. Now is tho time, thought
tho Fiddler; and without stopping a
moment, struck np, in a bold, vigorous
style, "Willie Brew'd a Peck o'Maut."
Out went tho handkerchiefs, away went
the tears.
"Chorus!" cried the Fiddler; and in
an instant all struck up
"For wo aro nao fou, we'ro no that ion,
But juat a tlrappie in our ec;
Tho cock may craw, tho day may daw,
But aro we'll taato tho barley brod"
Tho song ended, up struck the Fid?
dler, in bis best style, the reel of "Jenny
Dang the Weaver."
"Hey, ye devils!" cried Sandy.
"Scotland foreverl" oried Jamie; and
in an instant, tables, chairs, and glasses,
were scattered in all directions, and tho
whole party dancing and jumping about
like madmen.
Ont ran the affrighted Professor, (for
ho did not know what might come next,)
up came the landlady with her terrified
train of inmates. But none durst enter
the room, the hurras and thums on the
floor being so boisterous; and it was
only upon the entry of a Scotch traveler,
who had just arrived, and who cried to
tho Fiddler for any sake to stop, that
order was restored.
It is needless to say that tho Profes?
sor paid his bot cheerfully, and was fully
convinced of tho effect of Scotch music,
when properly played; and that the
lundludy took caro that the Fiddler
never came into her house again on
Burns' anniversary dinner.
