Seven years ago a London bank was robbed of ?11,000 by a fellow named Jones, and so well had he laid his plans that ho made good his escape with his booty.. But the polioe of London never forgot his great crime. The robber's family was placed under surveillance, and when, tr neting that time had effaced the recollection of the robbery from the pnblio mind, they ventured two weeks j ago to sail to Canada to meet the guilty ! husband and father from whom they had been so long separated, the sleuth hounds of justice accompanied them. On Thursday there was a happy family meet? ing in Toronto-tho sorrow of seven years* separation was swept away in blissful re-union-when the tender scene was rudely interrupted by several unpo? etical policemen, who took the crest? fallen Jones into custody to answer for his apparently forgotten crime. THE WHIRLIGIG OP FORTUNE.-The Empress Eugenie's dwelling at Chisel hurst, England, was rented for her use from an attorney, named Strode, in London. We are assured by speoial cable telegram from England to-day that the estate is merely held by Mr. Strode as trustee of the Countess Beauregard, a pensioned mistress of Napoleon, for the uso of her illegitimate son by Bona? parte. When shall we bo done with the scandals and romance of the French empiro? NATURAL GAS.-The town of Erie, Pa., was lighted Wednesday night and last night by "natural gas" obtained from a well sunk by the Erie Gas Company nenr their works. Thirteen gas wells in va? rious parts of the city are now furnish? ing fuel and light for manufactories. The gas is being introduced into private dwellings. An extensivo firo occurred at Tnnhan nook, Wyoming County, Thursday morn? ing, which destroyed twenty buildings including Hufford's Hotel and many of the principal business bouses of the town. Tho loss is estimated at SlOO.000. The cause of the fire, which started in the stables of the hotel, is not stated. The balloons sent out from Paris aro furnished by the Post Office Department, at a cost of lG.OOOf. each. They carry about 25,000 letters each, at half a franc, so the department pockets a loss of 3,500f. per balloon. Notice.
