failure, detracts nothing from tho merits
of the improvement itself. Two con?
flicting interests were to bo nffected by
its use: that of tho time-honored arti?
ficer in gold-plnte, nud that of tho mo?
dern rubber-worker; neither of whom
seem to have been able to discover that
the above method was expressly designed
for tho bett interests of both and tho
public; but under a vnguo apprehension
of injury to their 4'craft,"similar to that
'which stirred the minds of thc Ephesians
on a memorable) occasion, they have
cried qut against it as au innovation, pa?
tented, aud, thereforo, not to bo tole?
rated.
Had the dentists made it tho subject
of eulightened, practical investigation,
such us is due from professional men to
the publio, the pre-eminence of thin
method over any other now in uso would
have made itself manifest.
It would have been found to be well
calculated to obviate tho evil effects re?
sulting from wearing metulic plutos for
partial cases-a practice which has an?
nually destroyed thousands of natural
teeth to which these were attached.
It would have been found cupnble of
ameliorating the still more deplorable
practice by which reckless oporaton?,
without regard to nge, sex or conse?
quences, got rid of difficult partial cases
altogether, by heroically converting thom
into complete ones, easier of construction
and more remunerative-tearing away
often, at a single sitting, every natural
tooth, sound or defective, which the con?
fiding patient is possessed of; an opera?
tion which can never be contemplated by
the faithful practitioner without indig?
nation.
It would have been found capable of
gradually accomplishing the important
result of protecting the publio against
the abuses of ignorant pretenders, by
restoring and confining a much abused
art to the hands of enlightened and
skillful operators.
Such an investigation not having been
made, the merits of this improvement
have not yet been appreciated; therefore,
the patentee now calls on the public to
investigate this matter for themselves.
