The person or persons in possession gave the required promise? ana the gentlemen on returning were fired into by a party of colored men, tho fire was returned and three or four of the assailants were wounded. Here that matter ?nded. At night notwithstanding the promise the arms were distributed. On Mon? day morning some 800 armed negroes gathered in the vicinity of Clin? ton, sud threats were mudo that the country within five miles round should bo burnt. Becoming apprized of .this alarming condition of affairs, white citi? zens from, the purrounding country quickly turned out, and soon a large force had collected. Acting under au? thority of JVL>. Smith Jones, Sheriff of Laurens, a committee of fivo gentlemen was sent to the insurgents to ascertain the natnre of the warlike attitude. They were told that they had been informed the white men were about to take their arma-another one ot the fadioal plans for promoting strife-and that they had turned out to prevent it. Tho commit? tee assured them that no such idea had been entertained, that tho white men did not want their guns, had no uso for them, and would not touch them if they ; were lying out in the road. On being questioned as to the threats of burning they denied ever having made any, and that being convinced now that they were wrongly informed as to the white men intending to take the guns, would go to their homes peaceably. The committee said that was all that was desired, and then returned to the Sheriffs posse. The insurgents in a short time dispersed with tho exception of about sixty who loitered about the town until near night. This is the su tn and substance of tho plain story as related by reliable partici? pants, the wild, exaggerated and un? truthful reports to^ the contrary, thou? sands of which oro afloat, and all of which are eagerly picked up and rolled as sweet morsels under radical tongues and fashioned into paragraphs suitable for radical purposes.-Neioberry Herald.
