* agitator has taken a step in tho right
direction. Wo aro of opinion, howevor,
that tho Republican loaders -will not
think favorably of this anti-Teutonic
operation of their eloquent but erratio
ally. Trouble is beginning in the Re?
public camp.-New York Herald.
It is said that Frederick tho Great,
while taking a walk one fine morning in
Berlin, met a small-sized Israelite who,
in that era of prejudice and persecution,
endeavored to avoid him. The bluff old
Frederiek ordered him to stop, and
grimly inquired why ho attempted to
run away? "Because I am afraid of
your majesty," was tho answer. "In?
fernal scoundrol," cried tho King in an
outburst of passion, "I want everybody
to love me, not to fear me;" and lest tho
offence should bo repoated, ho punished
it by a sound thrashing on tho spot.
The attitude which Prussia now holds
towards Franco is in some respecta not
dissimilar to that of Frederick in this
incident above related. Prussia desired
the good will of Franoe, but received
only hatred and sour looks. There was
no fear on cither side; but when Franco
threw down the gauntlet, Prussia took it
np without a moment's hesitation. The
result has thus far been disastrous tc
French arms, and Prussia is now de?
termined to whip France into a respect?
ful if not affectionate frame of mind.
Will sho succeed? This is tho vital
