Bits of meat are thrown out which would make hashed meat or bash. Pork spoils for. the want of salt, and beef because the brine wants scalding. Coffee, tea, pepper and spices are left to stand open and lose their strength. Potatoes in the cellar grow and the sprouts are not removed until they bo come useless. Yinegar is drawn in a tin basin and al? lowed to stand until both basin and vine? gar are spoiled. The flour is sifted in a wasteful man? ner, and the bread-pau left with the dough sticking to it. Cold puddings are considered good for nothing, when oftentimes they can be steamed for the next day. - PROVERBS.-Borrowed garments sel? dom flt well. Haste often trips up its own heols. THE GREAT CATARACT IN SOUTH AME? RICA.-In the month of April last, a waterfall of most unusual height was discovered on the Potora, a tributary of the Essequebo Biver, by Mr. C. B. Brown, of the Geological Survey of British Guiana. Being short of provi? sions, and a great distance from his boats, Mr. Brown was not able to devote more than a coupie of hours to the ex? amination of the falls, which, by hasty barometrical observation, he found to be nearly nine huudred feet in height, the breadth of tho river at tho top of tho falls being one hundred yards, and its depth fifteen feet. A FEARFUL- BECOKD.-The New York World publishes what it calls a "murder map" of New York, in which, by dag? gers and pistols, it indicates the locations where seventy-eight murders have takon place within ten years. Theso include only those mysterious batoheries which may be called the historio murders of New York, and the obief homioide crimes whioh have polluted the city within the past ten years.
