You dare not mock at the Qphynx. Many find it hard to understand how a great nation Uko France can be over? run in a mouth, so as to appear almost as powerless as was degenerated Rome before Alario or Attila. But, setting aside the advantages of superior strategy and military organization, there are rea? sons for the phenomenon that an inspec? tion of the German newspapers easily disoloses. The uppor forms of the gram? mar schools, even, havo sent many of their pupils into the ranks-ono of them no leas than eighteen out of forty. From these details, and many more like them,' we gather the true solution ol the mys? tery. STEAM ON COMMON ROADS.-Tho prac? ticability of using steam ou couimou roads appears at last to have been tho? roughly tested in Scotland, where the success of Mr. R. W. Thompson's road steamers, after various trials, has earued for them tho endorsement of the most skeptical. A six-horse road steamer has been running for several months from Aberdeen, a distance of four miles, over a wretched road, to tho Kittoch Flour Mills. lu many parts of tho road the grade is one in eight, over which thc steam engine draws ten tons with great ease at the rate of three miles and a half an hour. When we havo canals navi? gated by steamboats, and locomotives run on common roads, "trade and travel" will inorease "beyond expres? sion." The Cubau bonds, of which much has been heard, are held at twenty-five cents on the dollar, and are chiefly iu the hands of Cubans and other friends of the cause as subscriptions to the fund for carrying on the revolution, and not for any oxpeoted profit from tho bonds themselves. The securities aro in de? nominations of $100, 8500, 81,000 and 85,000, bearing ?eve? per cent, interest, payable in gold when the United States recognize tho republic, or tho war with Spain is ended.
