CARPET BAO RULERS.-We have never seen anything about the carpet-bag gen? try more pointed or severe tuan the fol? lowing, taken from the New York Sun, a Republican journal, edited by Charlea A. Dana, formerly of the Tribuno, and more recently Assistant Secretary of War under Stanton. That paper saya that the overwhelming defeat of Geu. Grant's administration in North Carolina, fore? shadows its downfall in all the former slave-holding States. The fruits of the carpet-bag reign of the last ?ve years are what might havo been expected. The world may be searched in vain for go? vernments so immoral, so shamelessly oorrupt, so hopelessly rotten, as thoso now prevailing in the South. Politically, they may be changed; but this cannot cure one of the sorest evils already in? flicted. These scamps havo run the States they rule ruinously into debt. Tho Legislatures controlled by them have pledged the States to tho dischnrgo of pecuniary obligations of crushing weight, to tbe future redemption of au enormous amount of bonds, aud to tho imposition of onerous taxes, through a series of years. This has been dono in furtherauco of all sorts of schemes whereby tho authors reap present wealth and auticipato larger gains in the immediate future. Thoso burdens havo already seriously embar? rassed all of these States, and well nigh bankrupted some of thom; and to sn YO them from ruin, the roigu of tho carpet? bag robbers must bo speedily brought to an end. There would seem to bo uo good reason why the honest meu in these sorely plundered States should not bnnd together, irrespectivo of past politicul differences, ana wrest them out of tho handB of the thieves that despoil them. All the issues which mado their advent even a possibility have been settled. Let the better class of old citizens accept the situation iu good faith, and assuro the negroes that there is no disposition to deprive them of their uew-born privi? leges, aud there will bo nu uprising of the people that will drive out these ravenous villains, and restore to the States what they have not had since they plunged into rebellion nine years ago, atable, thrifty respectable governments." ONE HUNDRED EMIGRANTS BURNED TO DEATH.-A very sad occurrence is re Eorted at Rio de Janeiro, namely, tho urning of an emigrant ship, and the consequent loss of over 100 passengers on board. The details of this terrible catastrophe are given by the Captain of the Frenoh bark Adele Louise, who suc? ceeded iu saving some of the persons from the ill-fated vessel-the Munin Barraviua-on its way from Genoa for Montevideo, with 128 passengers and twenty-five of a orew. A FATAL CIIALLEN?E.-In Beuton Township, Benton County, Iowa, a few days ago, a young man named John Simpson, who bnd been out on a bunt, dared a daughter of Mr. Sanders to fire his gun. Tho girl (fourteen years of age) took the gun. Simpson told hor to point at his bead. She did so, it sud? denly discharged, and laid Simpson dead at her feet. The girl, iu raising the gUD, raised the hammer also, which fell as sho relaxed her hold. The amount of money which can be saved in every family by buying silver or copper-tipped shoes for children, will surprise any one who has not tried it. Col. Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, who secretly left this country after the death of his father in Baltimore, is tho com? mandant at Tailleries.
