It is ascertained that the annual interest on the public debt is $131,000,000 in gold. Each day it amounts to $258, 680; each hour to $14,012, and each minut? to $249. This is as far down as it has been figured, tho mathematician undoubtedly assuming that tho affair Teas altogether too largo to be ciphered down to so small a point. During the time of eight hours when tho tax-payers of tho country are asleep, in the still hours of the night, this endless gold in? terest ia piling np, and to such an ox tent that tho man who retires at 10 awakens at 6 to find it has increased just $119,586. Does any one wonder now that the people are discontented with the present administration of Federal affairs, and that all the elections are go? ing in favor of the Democracy? How long can the working people of Ameri? ca endure such a drain npon their sub? stance? HORRIBLE EFFECT OF INTEMPEBANCE.
