The Sergeant's Story.
BT OH ABLES DIMITRY.
Onr army lay
At break of day
A foll league from the foo away;
At set of sun,
The battle done,
Wo cheered our triumph dearly won.
Not strong were wo
If strength them be
In numbers only. But tho freo
Aro strong to do
Whoso hearts aro true,
Though many strive against tho few.
All night before
Wo marked tho roar
Of hostile guns that on us bore;
And hero and thero
The fitful blaro
Of sudden bugles smote the air.
No idle word
The quiet stirred
Among us aa tho morning neared;
And brows woro bout
AB silent wont
Unto its post oach regiment.
Blank broke the day,
And wan and gray
The drifting clouds went on their way;
Bo Bad tho morn
Our colors torn
Upon the ramparts droop'd forlorn.
At early sun
The vapora dun
Were lifted by a noarer gun,
At stroke of nine
Auspicious signl
The Bun shone out along tho lino.
Thon loud and cloar
From cannoneer
And riflemen arose a ch ocr;
For as the gray
Mists cloared away,
We saw the charging foe's array.
Dear Lordl how poured
Tho yelling bordo,
While all our guns responsivo roaredl
In that wild boll
No man could toll
Who lived or died, or stood or fell!
To left and right,
From height to height,
The hungry cannon urged to fight,
And in tho wreck
Of battle's track
Sharp cleft the rifle's oeaselees crack.
So long, blood-dyed,
Our guns we plied 1
So long tho stubborn foe replied!
Till breast to breast
Their lines wo pressed
Beyond tho red hill's flaming crest.
Then in the van,
From man to man,
A quickly gathering rumor rau;
From rank to rank
It ros? and sank
"Hurrrh, boyal Jackson's on their flank!"
What fate befell
Lot story tell,
When Jackson etruck with shot and shell;
But woli we knew
What work to do
When all our oharging bugles blew.
Our army lay
At break of day
A full league from the foo away;
At set of sun,
The battle done,
We cheered our triumph dearly won.
A DUTIFUL DAUGHTER.-Tho father of
Mrs. Siddons had always forbidden her
to marry an aotor, and of oourso she
chose a member of the old gentleman's
company, whom sh? secretly wedded.
"When Roger Keroble heard of it, ho was
furious. "Have I not," ho exclaimed,
"forbade you to marry a player?" The
lady replied, with downcast eyes, that
she had not disobeyed. "What, madam!
have yon not allied yourself to marry
about the worst performer in my compa?
ny?" "Exactly so," murmured tho
timid bride; "nobody can call him an
actor."
The longest-lived people in the world
appear to bo French Generals. Think
of Baraguay D'Hilliers growing furious
under his seventy-fire years at not being
sent to the front; Changarnier at seventy
seven years lamenting in a published
card his "bitter sorrow" at not receiv?
ing a oommand, and lastly, the old Duke
de Montemart, offering himself and thc
"stirrnps I wore at Jena in tho first dra?
gons." The patriotic faith of such
irascible old gentlemen hos something
sublime in it.
The Boston Saturday Evening Gazette
says that Rev. Dr. Alexander H. Vinton
was instantly cured of chewing tobacco
by a yonug miss of twelve, to whom he
was giving good advice about Lent. She
said, "Pshaw! don't preach self-denial
to me, when you have your mouth full
of nasty tobacco." The reverend gen?
tleman turned aside his head, removed
the odions weed from his mouth, and
has never since tasted it.
The report that a young man at Alle?
gheny, Pa., lost his speech by tho explo?
sion of:a fire-orackor on tho 4th, has
bothered the eminent doctors. Thoy all
went to writing about the different
organs of spoech thai must havo been
affected by the explosion, and now it
turns out that it was a written speech
that he lost, which was in his pocket,
and took firo from tho fire-cracker.
