Through some petty disturbance in au opium shop kept by some fascinating native ladies, two men belonging to one of the Chinese gunboats stationed there, were sentenced by the mandarin in charge of the fleet to an indefinito number of blows, which wore duly inflicted. Smarting under the severe treatment, one of the victims vowed vengeance. Ho watched his op? portunity, and in the middle of tho fol? lowing day, when the mandarin was, ac? cording to his custom, looked in the sweet arms of Morpheus, he stole into his cabin, and buried the fatal blado in his heart. Seizing the body in his arms before an alarm could be given, ho car? ried it on deck, and plunged with it into tho muddy waters of tho Wong-poo, then running a strong ebb.
