evening, says: "We have won a brilliant

eleventh Prussian corps, aud the second
Bavarian. This force carried by assault,
nuder the eyes of the Princo Royal, tho
fortress of Weisseuburg and tho heights
between Weissenbuig and Geisburg.

corps, was splendidly defeated-being

self was killed; 500 prisoners were taken
-none of them wounded; many Turcos

was 30,000; the Prussian G.000. Artillery
won the fight; little iufanty; no cavalry
employed.

Chief, Gen. Moltko, has chauged from

possible that Prince Frederick Charles
will push forward and attack Nancy.
Tho fight at Saarbr?cken, on Saturday
last, lasted six hours on both sides-GOO
men placed hors du combat. Judging
from French accounts, tho mitrailleures
have already decided tho war. Tho
story whioh recently originated in France
about a naval engagement in Crixhavon,
in which a Prussian war vessel was suuk,
is false. Thcro has been no collision at

far. Tho French say that tho needle
gun recoils so badly that marksman are

There are also twenty-seven sailing ves?

pense to which these steamers and sail?
ing vessels are subjected will probably
aggregate $14,000 per day, ana thore is
no relief for them except by the cessa?
tion of tho war. It may be, too, that
French steamers will be tied up in the
same way, when the Prussian navy gets
more of its cruisers afloat.
WASHINGTON, August 5.-The Cabinet
mooting held to-day was attended by all
tho members, excepting Secretarys Fish
aud Boutwell, who were represented by
Assistant Seoretarys Davis and Richard?
son. They considered for somo time the
appropriation bills, in connection with
the opinion of Attornoy-General Acker?
man, but were unable to provide for tho
defect in tho law. Therefore, tho Go?
vernment will be compelled to await
further legislation, though some of the
trades of tho public service will, iu tho
meantime, suffer. It is known from the
President himself that he will not call an
extra session of Congress unless tho war
in Europe shall so affect our interest as
to ronder oue necessary; but of this he
has no appreheusiou at present. Tho
President did not officially hear, uutil
Wednesday, by a telegram, from the De?
partment of State, that M. Berthauy hud
advised this Government that France had
declared war against Prussia. This fact
