When tho dim ?nd misty light of n
winter's morning penetrated into tho
narrow court, struggled through the
begrimed window of tho wretched room,
Worden awoko from his hoavy sleep,
and found himself alono. Ho rose, and
looked round him; the old flock mattress
on the floor was undisturbed; every?
thing was just as he remombored to
have seen it last; and there wero no
signs of any one, save himself, having
occupied the room during tho night.
He inquired of the Other lodgers, and
the neighbors; but his daughter had not
been seen or heard of. Ho rambled
through the streets, and scrutinized
eaoh wretched face among tho crowds
that thronged them, with anxious eyes.
But his searoh was fruitless, and he re?
turned to his garret when night came on,
desolate and weary.
For many days ho occupied himself in
the same manner, but no trace of his
daughter did he meet with, and no word
of her reached his ears. At length ho
gave up the pursuit as hopeless. Ho
had long thought of tho probability of
her leaving him, and endeavoring to
gain her bread in quiet elsowhere. She
had left him at last to starve alone. Ho
ground his teeth, and enrsed her!
- He begged his bread from door to
door. Every half-penny he could wring
from the pity or credulity of thoso to
whom he addressed himself, wns spent
in the old way. A year passed over his
head; tho roof of a jail was the only one
that had sheltered him for many months.
He slept under aroh-wnys and in brick?
fields-anywhero, where there was some
warmth or shelter from the cold and rain.
But in the last stage of poverty, disease
and houseless want, he was a drunkard
still.
At last, one bitter night, he sank down
on a door-step, faint and ill. Tho pre?
mature dcoay of vice and profligacy had
worn him to tho bone. His cheeks
?were hollow and livid; his eyes were
sunken, and their sight was dim. His
legs trembled beneath his weight, and a
cold shiver ran through every limb.
And now the long-forgotten scones of a
mis-spent life crowded thick and fast upon
him. He thought of the time when he
had a homo-a happy, cheerful home
and of those who peopled it, and flocked
about him then, until tho forms of his
elder children seemed to rise from the
grave, and stand about him-so plain,
HO clear, and so distinct they were, that
he could touoh and feel them. Looks
that he had long forgotten were fixed
upon him once more; voices long since
hushed in death sounded in his ears like
the music of village bells. But it was
only for an instant. The rain beat
heavily upon him; and cold and hunger
were gnawing at his heart again.
Ho roso and dragged his feeble limbs
a few paces further. The street was
silent and empty; tho few passengers who
passed by at that late hour, hurried
quickly on, and his tremulous voico was
lost in the violence of tho storm. Again
that heavy chill struck through his
frame, and his blood seemed to stnguate
beneath it. He coiled himself up in a
projecting door-waj', and tried to sleep.
But sleep had fled from his dull and
glazed eyes. His mind wandered strange?
ly, but ho waB awnko and conscious.
The well known shout of drunken mirth
sounded in his ear, tho glass was nt his
lips, tho board was covered with choico
rich food-they were boforo him; ho
had but to reach out his hand and tako
them-and, though tho illusion was
reality itself, ho knew that he was sitting
alono in the desorted street, watching
the rain-drops os they pattered on tho
stones, that death was coming upon him
by inohes, and that thero were none to
care for or help him.
Soddenly ho start-id up in tho ex?
tremity of terror. Ho had heurd his
own voico shouting in the night air, ho
knew not what o: why. Hark! A groan!
-another 1 His senses were len ving him ;
half-formed and incoherent words burst
from his lips; and his hands sought to
teur and lacerate his flesh. He was go?
ing mad and ho shrioked for help till his
voice failed him.
t He raised his head and looked up tho
lone dismal street. He recollected that
outcasts Uko himself, condemned to
wander day aud night in those dreadful
etroots, had sometimos gouo distracted
with thoir own loneliness. Ho remem?
bered to have heard many years before
that a bomoloss wretch had once been
found in a solitary cerner, sharpening a
rusty knife to pluugo into his own heart,
preferring death to thnt endless, weary
wandering to and fro. In au instant his
rosolvo was taken, his limbsreceived new
life; he ran quickly from tho spot, aud
paused not for breath until ho roached
tho river-side.
Ho crept softly down tho steep stouo
stairs that lead from tho commencement
of Waterloo Bridgo down to tho water's
level. He crouched iuto a corner and
hold his breath, os tho patrol passed.
Nover did prisoner's heart throb with
tho hope of liberty and lifo half so eager?
ly os did that of tho wretched man ot
tho prospect of death. Tho watch passed
close to him, but ho remained unobserv?
ed; and after waiting till tho sound of
footsteps had died away in tho distance,
he cautiously descended, ?md stood bc
neath the gloomy aroh that forms tho
landing-place fr?m the river.
Thp ?Ide was ip, and the water flowed
nt bis feet. Tho rain had ceased, tho
wind was - lulled, and all was, for the
moment, still and quiet-so quiet, that
tho slightest sound on tho opposite
hank, even the rippling of the water
against the barges that were moored
there, was distinctly audible to his ear.
Tho stream stole languidly and slug?
gishly on. Strango and fantastic forms
rose to the surface, and beckoned him to
approach; dark gleaming eyes peered
from tho water, nnd seemed to mock his
hesitation, while hollow murmurs from
behind urged him onward. Ho retreat?
ed a few paces, took a short run, despe?
rate leap, and plunged into tho water.
Not five seconds had passed, when ho
rose to the wator's surfuce-but what a
chango had taken place in that short
time, in all his thoughts aud feelings!
Life-life-in any form, poverty, misery,
starvation-anything but death. Ho
fought and struggled with tho water that
closed over his head, and screamed in
agonies of terror. Tho curse of his own
son rang in his ears. Tho shore-but
ono foot of dry ground-he could almost
touch tho step. Ono hand's breadth
nearer, and ho was saved-but tho tide
boro him onward under tho dark arches
of tho b'ridgo, and he sank to tho bottom.
Agoin ho rose, and struggled for lifo.
For ono instant-for one brief instant
tho bnildings on tho river's banks, tho
lights on the bridge through which the
current had borne him, tho black water,
and tho fast-flying clouds, were distinct?
ly visible-once more he snnk, and once
again he rose. Bright flames of fire shot
up from earth to Heaven, and reeled be?
fore his eyes, while tho water thundered
in his ears, and stunned him with its
furious roar.
A week afterward, the body was
washed ashore, some miles down the
river, a swollen and disfigured mass.
Unrecognized and unpiticd, it was borne
to tho grave; and thero it has long sinco
mouldered away.
