tho father of Jeter Phillips bade him
farewell, wheu, for the first time, Phil?
lips broke dowu aud wept bitterly. Las!
night, Rep. Mr. Woodward, of the Me?
thodist Church, staid with him till IC
o'clook. The jail guard then went in.
About 1 o'clock in tho morning, Phillips
slept an hour or two soundly; got up,
bathed aud remained reading the Bible
till day-light. This morning, he sen1
his love to the chaplain of his old regi?
ment. About sun-rise, a number ol
clergymen visited him. Phillips has
made a confession, that he took his wife
out on Sunday, the 17th February
walked her four miles from the city, auc
then walked hor about in the woods,
until she was so tired that she had to sii
down;ibe then fired on her, but failed tc
kill her, aud she commenced screaming
for help and struggling, which he endcL
by leaping on her nnd strangling her
Ile then returned- to Richmond, am
staid that night at a hotel.
About 1 o'olock the prisoner wai
bronght ont of his cell aud asceuded tin
scaffold iu tho jail yard. From the re
markable character of the murder, there
was most intense anxiety to witness th<
execution, aud the streets were crowdet
several blocks from jail, though only 10(
speotators were admitted to the yard

WHEREAS, authentic information has
roached this office, that au unprotected
and unoffending colored woman, named Mary
Sloan, on thc night of Saturday last, thc lGth
Julv, was forcibly taken from her dwelling, in
Anderson County, by 6?x despieablo ruffians
in diaguiso, and brutally whipped and mal?
treated; and whereas, such infamous outrages
aro not only shameful violations of tho rights
of tho persons moro immediately aggrieved,
but discreditable to tho community in which
they aro perpetrated, and all law-abiding
citizens arc dccplv interested in the detection
and punishment of tho wrong-doers.
Now, therefore, I, ROBERT K. SCOTT,
Governor of the State of South Carolina, in
order that the ends ht justico may bo sub?
served, the peace of thu community main?
tained, and the majesty of tho law vindicated
by tho arrest and punishment of tho dastardly
perpetrators of this vito outrage, do hcrebv
oder a reward of FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS
for their arrest, or the arrest of eittior of
thom, and their delivery in any jail of this
State, with proof to convict, or a proportionate
reward for ouch information as will lead lo
