THE DAILY "Let our Just Censure BY J. A. SELBT. COLUMBIA, S. C.. SATURDAY MORNING, JULY 23, 1870. VOL. YI-NO. 107. Another Land Swindle. The charges of theft, robbery aud fraud against the "Scot? Ring," and their un? derstrapper J, are so frequent that they have almost ceased to or?ate surprise. But a few weeks ago, tho State was robbed of $90,000 in ono transaction of the Land Commission. Now wo aro called upon to record another nearer home, and tho facts of which all of our people, both white and; black, aro well acquainted with. Two tracts of land, known ns tho "Jack Hood" and "Ros? ser places, have been purchased by the Land Commission. Tho facts of tho case are as follows: These two tracts (1,00-1 acres) wero purchased by J. P. G. Mittag IS months ago, for ono dollar and fifty ceuts per aero. Repeated efforts to sell tho laud to the Stato by Mittag failed, and neediug tho assistanco of other par? ting to carry out his designa, ho called to his aid ono Middleton S. Gill, and R. J. Donaldson, thc Stato Senator from Chesterfield. Mittag, to relievo himself frojn all further conuection with tho mat? ter, apparontly, sells tho 1,001 acres to Gill for $2,000, but ut thesamo time signs tho deed for thrco thousand-a suspi? cious circumstance to say the least. Mit? tag sold the land to Gill in April, 1870; but we lind, by referenco to the Clerk's office, that salo to tho Land Commission by Gill took placo Ja unary 20, 1870 threo months before tho titles passed from Mittag to Gill. If this is not a strange proceeding in legal matters, we are at a loss to compre? hend. The Land Commission paid Gill ?8 per acre-$8,032 for tho 1,001 acres a clear gain to Gill, Donaldson aud Mit? tag, of 80,000. Tho land is kuowu to be utterly worthless, and there is not a colored or wbito maa in this Couuty who would accept it as a freo gift from the Stato and bo compelled to depend upon it for a support." We understand the colored people aro preparing a protest ngaiust the purchuse, which will bo pre? sented to the Advisory Board. Wo think, if the colored peoplo will sift this und other matters thoroughly, iu which these mon have been engaged for tho last two years, they will arrive at a just apprecia? tion of their services to tho iutercst of the colored rn co. Tho above facts oro without exaggera? tion, and received tho assent of a pro? minent colored radical, before they were put in type.-Lancaster Ledger. HOWARD.-The Christian soldier ap? pears in of lie i ul garments as white as snow in the majority report and as black as a chimney sweep in the minority re port. Tho investigation has evidently been conducted with a view of covering up and hiding under the wiugs of thu bird of freedom, ns far as possible, the disposition of tho golden harvest reaped by the national "moral agriculturist,'' whilo the saintly warrior, with the air of a martyr, his hands-folded meekly across his Christian breast, awaits his doom, The impersonation of cant and thrift, he has by the exercise of the one succeeded in the other. Although ho may get off this time, and possibly havo the thanks of Congress for the zeal displayed as a patriotic professional philanthropist, there is "one little spot" that the mi nority report hints at that all the water in the sea cannot wash away. It is a "damned spot" that "will not out" of "the blood of all the Howards." In an affray ot Pawtucket, R. L, Sun? day night, Charles E. Kent, a street cor conductor, stabbed and instantly killed Joseph R. Whiting, and also stabbed, perhaps fatally, Louisa Whiting, a daughter of tho murdered man.
