When we had nssembled for dinner in
our smart clotbes, I thought Mujor De
verel the finest looking gentleman I had
ever seen-my Valentino was a man to
be proud of. We ludics left tho t?iuuer
tablo early, for wo had somo little ar?
rangement to rn uko for tho entertain?
ment H of our guests who were expected
in the evening. Wo had not been many j
minutes ont of the dining-room when
the three boys rushed out aud joined us
iu the morning-room, where our friends
were to have tea on their Arrival. "Oh,
Grace, he ?B the best fellow goi?g. Ho
will do anything-everything-we will
have charades!"
I asked, "Did Major Deverel propose
charades?"
"O, no; you can't get him to propose
anything. *I go with the streum ou Val?
entine's day,"' ho said."
Our boya were very fond of acting,
and, with very littlo help from others,
they and I had got up several very suc?
cessful charade? that winter. They were
njl impromptu characters. We fixed our
word nod how the syllable.", should be
expressed, and then left all the acting
and the diuloguo to the inspiration of
the moment. I knew tho boys wished
for charades, and of course I kuew they
would have nil their wishes os far as possi?
ble fulfilled. They had been brought
up on tho very (not over) indulgent
principle, and were not tho least spoilt
by it. So charades we wero to hove,
and Major Deverel was to act with us.
? "Hud he ever acted?" "Hundreds of
times, no doubt." "Had ho ever acted
impromptu charades?" "Nobody knows.
But no matter. He agrees to every?
thing-says he would not advise, nor
contradict, nor suggest, nor refuse, uor
doubt, nor run away-eau you want any
more than that? Don't be afraid, G rac ey.
Iiefc us fix on a word."
But I was afraid. Our friends were
arriving; a dozen people were iu tho draw?
ing-room already. I had no idea of
making an exhibition of myself with my
Valentino, who had several times treated
this Valentine's day as being a serious
epoch in his life, and as something to be
endured with vague wouderings, and an
odd anxiety which he tried to hide with
gay words; but which was something
quite real, and, as it seemed to mo, very
plain to see, and altogether impossible
to account for.
More carriages, more bell-ringing,
more greetings, more tea! My buttle
with Bertie was lost. I was defeated.
We were to have charades, and the first
word to be acted was fearful, out of com?
pliment to mo.
"You are in that unreasonable state of
agitation that you will scarcely need to
act anything, Gracey." I could only sit
and smile; I was beaten, and very amia?
ble under my misfortune.
Now, tho room in which we aoted, was
a long drawing-room. Standing ut the
top of this roora, if you looked down its
length of over thirty-three feet, you saw
two doors; one was ut tho end of the
room on the right baud and led into a
library, tho other at the side, as far down
as could be, aud lcd iutu the hall. Our
only prepuratiou for our favorite pas?
time, was to bring into tho room two
large screens. They were so placed as
to divide off tho end of tho roora which
was to be our stugc, and to hide tho two
doors by which we came on and went off.
Tho middle space between tho scieens
was marked off by a row of wax lights
on the floor, und a fence mudo by long,
low, wire guards, which had been con?
trived for the purpose. Tho only pecu?
liarity of this drawing-room, arose from
the fact of its huviug been made by
throwing two rooms together, by which
means there were two fire-places. One
was at the end opposite our stage, the
other in tho centro of the left hand side,
aud opposite the windows. They had
grates and chimney-pieces exactly alike,
and each had a looking-glass which reach?
ed up to the cornice of tho room. Tho
glass over the side of tho chimney-piece
could bo seen perfectly by the actors,
and when at the further end of tho stage,
our "situations" were reflected in it.
Before tho charade began, I spoko to
Major Deverel. "Thosyllablo fear is to
be a sceue with banditti, you know; you
aro to be just entering the stage from
the library. I, and my friends and the
maid aro to como on the stage in a state
of terror, tho banditti having robbed us,
and turned us out of our carriage. I
rush np to you to save us-and you"
ho was listeuiug with tho drollest half
smile upon his attentive faeo. I know I
looked alarmed for tho success of any
acting that he might bo concerned in,
aud ho read my thoughts exactly.
"Don't be frightened before tho
time," ho said. "I wont a nun ge any?
thing. Whatever you maj- do, I shall do
exactly ns I ought tb. I mean, as 1
should do if so placed in real life. Now
go-Uertie is making signs for yon."
What outrageous, silly confidence!
And yet ho spoko so pleasantly that I
could not scold.
"Bertio was in full power; a blazing
interest iu tho work to be begun instant?
ly glowed in his handsome faco. 'O,
Major, have you pistols? Ah, yon have
changed your coat.' I then saw thnt he
had a cloak on, aud pistols strapped
-'. v,1 ! I '-v" A." .' 5
round him'/ 'Your ?aiu?r' dressed mo,'
he said. 'I have not done anything my?
self. I go with the stream thia Valen?
tine's day, and make tho best of the
place on which tho stream may laud me;
that is all I am going to do."
I dan only add to this record of our
conversatiou, that I was more puzzled
than ever, by Major Deverel's words an?!
manner, and found myself ou (hostage
informing my nudionce, by means of a
talk with my friends, that we had left
our traveling carriage for the luxury of
an aftcruoou walk while proceeding to?
ward Naples, on an October day. r
Off we went, and on came the banditti
by tho library door behind us. Their
evil intentions wero announced in the
samo fashion, and they pnssed off, as we
had. The stage was then occupied by
Major Deverel, supposed to bo on a
walking expedition. From tho cries of
alarm-tho clash of weapons-wo women
rushed back ta tho stage. Tho maid on
her kuces in a paroxysm of fright, thc
friend, fainting on the top of the maid,
and I rushing up to Major Deverel, cry?
ing, "Save us!"
Then iu a moment a grnud tableau
was formed. I foti nd myself within the
Major's strong loft arm; and I eoufe.ss I
struggled, for I had not intended my
rush to end in such harborage lint I
was a mero feather compared with bin
strength. With a power which I don't
forget ho drew mo closer to him, ?nd
held mo caged within tho bend of his
iron arm. I glanced up to his face.
What a faco it was! His right arm was
stretched out, and the pistol iu his hand
cowed tho chief of tho bauditti, Master
Bertie, who looked mesmori^ed nuder
the earnest, glowing face, and steady,
triumphant eye. No one ever saw a
moro real thing than Major Deverel's
attitude and expression; the curtain
dropped amidst immense applause, and
I was released with a quiet smile. He
put his pistol into li ts belt, and said, as
if to himself, "The queerest thing in the
world. I'm glad it's over, though!"
"What is queer, uud what is over?" I
said-wo were re-arranging ourselves in
the library now. He answered, "I3y aud
by-by and by."
