beon spoiled by her rapid victories iu
two wars, and perhaps a worse fate was

of Alamauce, has been placed under
martial law by Kirk; tho Court House

Additional news hus been received that
Hon. Jno. Kerr, lion. S. P. Hill, Sheriff
Griffith, and several other prominent
conservative citizens'of Caswell County,
worn arrested at Yanceyvillc, yesterday,
ny Kirk. Tho Congressional candidates
in tho district wero speaking in tho court
house, whou Kirk surrounded it with sol?
diers that made arrests. No intelligence
of tho slightest resistance to law in that
or in other parts of the State.

and Hayward then commenced firing on
him, wounding him in the abdomeu aud
thigh.

A good anecdote is told of the famous
French surgeon Nelaton. Going through
one of the streets of Paris one day, he
came upon a crowd standing in front of
a drug store. There a mau lay stretched
out who had been terribly wounded by
a sharp buggy shaft. His bolly had boen
ripped, aud a large part of his intestines
protruded. His lifo could be saved only
by a very difficult and dangerous opera?
tion, but Nelaton was equal to tho occa?
sion, and soon his patient, quito a
wealth}- man, was sent home out of dan?
ger. For three weeks Nelaton heard
nothing more of him, but then ho made
his appearance and ashed his preserver
how much he owed him. "Hundred and
fifty francs," replied the surgeon. "That
is much," said tho mau, "bat givo mc a
specified bill; hero is your money." Neal
tou sat down and wrote as follows: "For
re adjusting a yard and n half of the in?
testinal caual, at a hundred francs per
yard, one hundred and fifty francs."
Au old, blind and deformed Scottish
needle-woman named Miss Mary Pyfer,
died recently in Edinburgh. Sho was of
remarkably short stature, of very plain
features and very poor, but she was moro
remarkable as being a poetess of no
mean order. A collection of her poems
was published in 18G5 for ber benefit.
