An exciting scone occurred yesterday
at Gol. Ames'cirons. After the "grand
review" had perambulated our streets,
and returned to tho tent, tho keeper of
the Mexican lions replaced them m tho
cago, and in coming out, instead of com?
ing ont back foremost, he came ont with
hie baok to the animals. As he stepped
ont the famous performing Mexican lion,
Charlie, jumped, upon his back, crush?
ing him to the earth. Tho man cried
oct twice, "Shoot him, shoot him!"
when a bystander drew his revolver and
fired three times, killing the lion upon
tho. spot. The keeper was somewhat
]aoerated, bat not seriously injured.
Col. Ames regrets very much the death
of his favorite performing animal, and it
is certainly a serious loss for him, but
nothing compared with his keeper. A
crowd of 1,0(30 or 1,500 people had gath?
ered aronnd when the incident occurred,
and such a skodadling wo havo seldom
eyer seen.
CiANiCAii TEACHING IN INSANITY.-A
writer in the American Journal of In?
sanity strenuously advocates didactic
and clinical teaching of insanity and
other cerebral and nervous disorders in
medical schools. Tho experience of
Gei8engor is quoted in proof of its entire
practicability. Dr. Hammond, of New
York, and Dr. Banduy, of St. Louis,
have instituted clinics on these subjects.
In Prance, thero were, in I860, accord?
ing to official statistical returns, 50,720
insane, and 39,053 idiots and cretins; in
England, in 1868, there were 83,203, and
in the United States probably not less
than 60,000. Insanity is acknowledged
to be a physical disease, amenable to
treatment, curable in a largo proportion
of cases, and yet it is almost ignored in
praotical medicine, and in medical
school receives little or no attention.
The effects of clinical teaching on the
insane subjects themselves are repre?
sented to be salutary.
