.- I,,., ? ??^.-,l? THE DAILY "Let our JuBt Censure' PHOn?. Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY COLUMBIA, S. C.. TUESDAY MORNING, JULY 19. 1870 VOL. VI-NO. 103. A C?wardly A??niislnntlon. On Tuesday night of this week one of the most cold-blooded and cowardly murders of which we have heard for sometime was committed about eight miles from Quitman, Georgia. The victftn of this diabolical outrage was a worthy young man named Thomas M. Alexander, twenty-six years of ugo, son of Dr. J. M. Alexander, firm of Al? exander & Russell, iu this city. It appears that young Alexander left his home near Quitman, to visit a neigh? bor about ten miles distant on tho main road, where ho spent a most delightful evening with his friends, and started to return homo about 10 and-a-half or ll o'clock. That was tho last time his friends saw him iu life, lt rained Tuesday evening on that road, but at tho time Mr. Alexauder loft for homo the rain had subsided so that foot-priuts of pedestrians passing that way were im? pressed in tho earth. Portions of tho road are -well shaded, aud at night when the moon is out the trees appear to as? sume colossal proportions and to tower almost to the ?ky, whilst their shndows, like black mantles, sweep tho highway and partially conceal all objects iu tho shadow. Young Alexander had entered one of these gloomy parts of this road, and had. passed a particular tree which hangs over the road, and forms a canopy with its branches. Here he fell. This must have been about midnight. Two hours after, a colored boy went np that road, passed through the shadows and almost stumbled over the lifeless body of poor Thomas M. Alexander. With such speed as a colored boy might make under similar circumstances he hastened to inform a neighbor, and when the parties returned io where the young gentloman lay they examined the body closely. ' A charge of buckshot had en? tered Alexander's back, torn through his body, aud passed out in front, near the left breast. Tho heart must havo been terribly mangled by the leaden missile.,. A further examination revealed the fact that the watch, pocket book, and other personal effects of the deceased were un? touched, and he had placed them in his pocket before leaving home. "When the sun came np in tho morniug -"the God given," with his bright and cheering rays -tho loot prints of a mau were discovered beneath tho tree, and near them thc print of a gun 6tock where it had rested from the hand of the assas? sin, who, judging from the foot prints, must have for some time awaited the ap? pearance of his victim. Tho iuvestigu tion, which will doubtless lead to tho ap? prehension of tho murderer, is goiug on, and we expect further particulars from Quitmau in a few days. In truth wo havo other particulars uow, but we with? hold them from good motives. [Savannah Republican. Wimt True Democracy Demands. It matters little by what names men or parties may bo called; it is their prin? ciples which should be primarily and chiefly considered. Tho Democratic name is of no consequence unless sup? ported by Democratic principles; aud the mau who claims to bo a Democrat and yet has no sympathy with the masses of the people is a choat aud a humbug. True Democracy has for its object the welfare of the whole people, instead of individuals or dusses. It repudiates nil ideas of privilege aud demands equality of right and equality of burden for all. It is thereforo directly antagonistic to the radical power in this country, which insists upon special favors for tho few at the expense of tho many, and which de? mands constant contribution from labor to capital with no corresponding return. It insists upon a just aud economical administration of thu Government in the interests of tho people; it insists that all i property shall pay its just proportion of taxes, aud that taxation shall be uia.de ns light as possible; it insists that tho pro? tective tariff, which is nothing more nor less thnu n tux on industry for tho benefit of wealth, shall be abolished; it insists that monopolies shall bo uo longer fos? tered in tho land; that class legislation shall censo, and that the tendency to the centralization and consolidation of power, both corporate and political, shall be checked at once, as tho only means of preserving thc rights and liber? ties of tho people. This is what true Democracy demands and insists upon, aud what all true De? mocrats aro working for; and whoever claims the name of Democrat and does not sanction and sustain these demands, is no Democrat, in fact, but "steals tho livery of Heaven to serve the devil in." 1 The People.
