Within tho sober roalms of loafless trees,
The russet year inhaled the dreamy air.
Like Bomo tanned reaper in his hour of ease:

The gray barns, looking from their hazy hill a.
O'er the dun waters widening in the vales,
Sent down tho air a greetiug to the milln,
On the dull thunder of alternate flails.
AU aighta were mellowed, and all sounds sub?

Tho hills seemed further, and the streams
sang long,
As in a dream tho distant woodman hewed
His winter log with many a muffled blow.
Tho embattled forests, erewhile armed with
gold,
Their banners bright with every martial

Now stood like some sad, beaten hosts of old,
Withdrawn afar in Time's remotest blue.
On sombre wings the vulture tried his flight;
The dove Boarce heard his Bighing mate's
complaint; .
And, like a star slow drowning in tho light,
The village church vane seemed to pale and
faint.
The sentinel cock upon tho hill-Bide crow
Crew thrice-and all was stiller than before
Silent, till somo replying warder blew
Hia alien horn, and thou waa heard no moro.
Where erst the {ay within the elm's tall crost.
Made garulous trouble round her unfledged
young:
And whore tho oriole hung her swaying nest,
By every light wind liko a censer swung:
Where sang tho noisy martina of tho caven,
The busy swallows circliug over near
Foreboding, as tho rustic mind believes,
An early harvest and a plenteous year;
Where every bird that wakod the vernal feast,
Shook tho Bweet slumber from its winga at
morn;
To warn the reaper of tho roey East,
All now was aimless, empty and forlorn.
Alone, from out tho stubblo, pipod the quail;
And croaked the crow through all tho dreary
gloom:
Alone, tho pleasant, drumming in tho vale,
Made echo in tue distant cottage loom.
There was no bud, no bloom upon tho bowers;
The spiders moved their thin shrouds night
by night;
Tho thiatle-down, tho only ghost of flowers.
Sailod slowly by-passed noiselessly out of
sight.
Amid all this-in tibia most dreary air,
And where tho woo d u i ne ehed upon the porch
Its crimson leavos, as if tho year stood there,
Firing tho floor with its inverted torch.
Amid all this^-tbe centre of the scene,
The white-haired juatron, with monotonous
tread !
Plied the swift wheel, ? and with her joyous

Sat like a fate, and watched tho flying
thread.
She had known sorrow-ho had walked with
her,
Oft Buppod, and broke with her tho athen
crust,
And in the dead loaves still bbc hoard the
stir
Of bia thick mantle trailing in thc dust.
While yet hor cheek was bright with Bummer
bloom;
Her conntry summoned and she gave her all;
And twice war bowed to her his sabio plume
He gave the sword to rust upon the wall.
He-gave thc sword, but not the hand that drew
And struck for liberty tho dying blow;
Nor him who, to bis siro and country true,
Fell 'mid tho ranks of tho invading foe.
Long,butnot loud, the droning wheolwenton,
Like the low murmur of a hive at noon;
Long, but not loud, thc memory of tho gone

At last the thread was snapped-her head
was bowed.
Life dropped the distaff through her banda
serene,
And loving neighbors smoothed her careful
shroud,
While death and winter closed tho autumn
scene.
THE MAN WHO MAY DE EXPECTED TO
LIVELONG.-Ho has a proper ami well
proportioned statue, without, however,
being too tall. Ho is rather of the mid?
dle size, and somewhat thick set. His
complexion ia not too florid; at auy rate,
too much ruddiness in youth is seldom
a sign of longevity. His hair approaches
rather to tho fair than to tho black. His
ekiu is strong, but not rough. His head
is not too big; he ha?. largo veins iu tho
extremities; his shoulders aro rouud
rather thau Hut. Ilia neck is not too
long; his abdomen does not project; his
hands are large but not deeply cleft. His
foot is rather thick thau loug, aud his
legs ure firm and round. He has a broad,
arched chest, a strong voice, and the fa?
culty of rctainiuir his breath for a loug
time without difficulty. There is a har?
mony in all his parts. Tits senses ure
good, but not too delicate; bis appetite
good, and digestion easy. The joys of
tho table are not to him of importance;
they ?uno his mind to severity, and his
soul partakes iu tho pleasure which they
communicate. He does not cat morely
for the sake of eating, but each meal is
au hour of daily festivity. Ho eats slowly,
und has not too much thirst; tho latter
being always a sign of rapid self-cou
sumptiou. Ho is serene, loquacious,
active, susceptible of joy, love and hope,
but insensible to tho impressions of ha?
tred, auger and avarice. His passions
never becomo violent or destructive. If
ever ho gives way to auger, ho expe?
riences rather a useful glow of warmth,
an artificial and gentle fever, without nu
overflowing of tho hilo. Ho is fond,
also, of employment, particularly calm
meditation und agreeable speculations.
Ho is an optimist, a friend to nature and
domestic felicity, ne has no thirst after
honor or riches, and banishes all thoughts
of to-morrow.

dem chickens, an' I didn't like to 'sturb
him ; 'so I jis tuk 'em, an' was gwine
back the next day to tell bim."
A Pennsylvania negro went to sleep
with his head on a railroad track, the
other day. A hand-car came along and
ran over him before it could be stopped,
much to tho horror of those on it. Tho
negro, however, only complained of
having been waked np, and demanded
the price of a new hat, or he would sue
the corporation under the civil rights
bill._
