A thorough search throughout the en?

that the intruder, whoever ho was, must
have concealed himself there before shu
retired. On this subject, the groom of
the chambers underwent a loug and close
examination, but nothing wns elicited
from him which tended, in the remotest
degree, toward a discovery of tho mys?
tery. It was remarked, and well remem?
bered, that tho wholo of the gentlemen
had remained in tho great hull loug after
tho ladies had retired to their respective
apartments, and the eagerness with
which every guest or retainer now joined
io the search, indicated their general
earnestness for the instant investigation
of tho subject, nnd tho detection and
punishment of the bold adventurer who
had been guilty of tho wanton and uu
parullcled crime. Every effort, however,
was unavailing.
