took place between the whites and blacks
in the eight ward to-day. The police,

to their cabins, one of them wrest a gun
from one of tho guards, named Swartz,
and shot him dead. A fight ensued be?
tween the guards uud convicts. Several
of the lutter wore wounded. Only two
of the convicts made their escape.

resolution was offered, that the Treasurer
