to some recently published statistics

smitten by the electric fluid within tho
past thirty years, of whom 2,252 wero

the last ten years, only 213 were fe?

Pontiac Illinois, was visited by a fire
on Wednesday night, which destroyed

of our country acknowledges that its first
duty, after providing for immediate exi
geucies, is to tako care of the rising
generation. But, from the day when the
Centurion's daughter, the sweet Virginia,
was waylaid, while tripping merrily to
school, and dragged away by the minions
of the lustful Claudius to dishonor, only
averted by death, down to the present,
when young girls are decoyed away from
home, taken to tho den of villains, and
made to gratify the devilish appetites of
worso than brutish beasts-from that
time to this, and in all times, doubtless,
men have lived who have been debased
enough to prey upon childhood, and to
single out the purest and most helpless
of God's creatures as victims of their
horrible cravings. Indeed, it seems as
if thero were more of such monsters
born to this age than to any other; as if
some caprice of destiny proposed to teach
manhood bow utterly vain the hope of
?onjuring the devil out of human nature.

"What is to prevent my child from being
the next victim?" It is impassible for
parental vigilance to follow every step
that the little feet will take in the course
of the long day; and who can tell at what
corner and at what hour some lustful
benst is lurking, reody to tempt or force
the wanderer to a haunt of crime? It
is, therefore, certain that popular opinion
would sanction tho extremest measures
of severity for tho punishment and pre?
vention of this growing evil of indecent
assault upon children. Crimes of this
kind demand tho death penalty as much
as any violatiou of the laws of God and
