Pendleton j boforo tho Literary Societies of tho: Uni? versity of Virginia: Gentlemen, if I have truly depicted the progressive condition of onr race if I have rightly appreciated the dignity of human life-two practical questions ariso to every thoughtful mind: Is our age worthy'of tho world? Are we worthy of our age? Is our age adding to the store of learning? I use the term in its broadest sense-ns comprehending every advance in every department of human experience-and thus ameliorating the condition of man. Or are we, like thank? less spendthrifts, living upon the accu? mulated treasures of thoso who havo gone before us? Not to press forward is to go back. I have already said that tho more material developments of physical Boienoe ore particularly active in this age. Never before hos the condition of the people been so good. Bad onough it still is. Immeasurable are tho oppor? tunities for improvement. Yet tho march of reform has been, with some excep? tions, steadily onward. Indeed, iu this faot lie? our chiefest danger. It may eaMlymake ns forget that "all chango ia not reform." It may easily lead us to mistake the oant of affected humanita? rianism for a generous and activo and noble oharity. It may easily lead us to an nndne partiality for tho present and a forgetfulness of the illustrious post. This generation cannot equal the names which graced the realms of imaginative or philosophical thought in the preced? ing century. We look in vain for that galaxy of literary talent which threw suoh an effulgence of glory over the last decade of the eighteenth and the begin? ning of the nineteenth century. Where are our Byron, and Scott, and Moore, and Campbell, and Wordsworth, and Cowper, and Coleridge, and Shelley, and Southey, and Mrs. Homans? Who is giving us in prose lotion works to compare with Waverly, or those stories Boaroely inferior, by the author of Pelham and Ernest Malt ravers? Who shall strike with equal hand the chords of human sympathy which have so of teu responded to the touch of Dickens? Where are our essayists who compare with the matchless Jeffrey and Sydney Smith, and Professor Wilson and Macau? lay, whoso brilliant contributions gave to the periodicals a commanding position in English literature? Where are our historians who eau contest tho palm of excellence- with Allison and Macintosh. Who on the continent to-day equals, even aspires to rival, the philosophical recollections, the glowing thought, the brilliant imagery of Madame de Stael, or Goethe, or Chateaubriand, or Lamartine, or Humboldt? We may have au occasional flash from Guizot or Thiers, but these are the dying embers of fires which glowed in the last generation. Those uamcs belong to a great past. In our own country, who presses for? ward to fill the place of Washington Irving or Cooper? Who will ronew the pleasure of Knickerbocker and Leather; stocking? Who among oar young men are to be the successors of Prescott, and Bancroft, aud Motley-of Bryant, and Halleok, and Longfellow, and enrich by a higher cultivation the places cleared by their pioneer labors? Who aspires safely to rival-I will not say excel-the commentaries of Kent and Story, or thoso immortal judgments which we owe to the genius, and learn? ing, and fidelity, and purity of Marshall and Taney? Young, ambitious men crowd tho halls of legislation and aspire to political honors. Who of them aro studying the characters and seeking with all their might to attain the excellence of Web? ster, and Calhoun, and Clay-of Wirt, and Piuckney, and Benton, and Chonte, and Silas Wright-of Giles, and Taze well, and John Taylor, of Caroline, and Nathaniel Mason-or going back to less approachable models, of Jefferson, and Madison, and Monroe? It is true, we are building up States / in tho wilds of tho Rocky Mountains with wonderful rapidity. It is true, we span tho continent with rail and wire, and send our thonghts in an instant across the waters of oJd oceau itself. It is true, wo are advancing with une? qual speed toward the summit of na? tional power and renown. So much the greater reason why wo should not lag behind in the path-way of purely intel? lectual and literary eminenco. So much the greater reason why wo should ever remember that thero is something better than materitd prosperity, something worthier than physical power or accumu? lated wealth. Let us find both hope and incentive in tho fact thal tho agps of greatest physical activity have been those of the greatest intellectual impulses. <. At Oswogo, the Union Elevator, with -10,000 bushels of grain-loss $127,000, insnr ance 899,000; at Rochester, the National Hotel stables-loss $22,000, insurance $15,000; nt Oil City, Penn., seven frame buildings and tho office of the Daily ,^Tio\ea-loss $30,000, insurance light; at Pf?videnco, lt. L, a largo tenement -*houso, by which fire twenty families were rendered homeless. A fire is also re? ported to have destroyed tho greater por? tion of the village of Gold Hill, Nevada. The Bishop of Chester has refused to consecrate a church at West Derby, near Liverpool, on account of tho olnbornte character of the decorations. Tho walls and roof, and almost, every pnrt of the church, are covered with painting and gilding, and there is au altar-pieco which the Bishop considers objectionable. The founder of tho church, a Mrs. Reade, who bas spent ?30,000 upon it, and re? fuses to alter to suit the Bishop's views, threatens him with a law-suit. Special KTotioes. A BROADSIDU FOR.
