Ho addressed that letter to "Columbus, Indiana," tho "Indiana" being made vory distiuot, written out in full and under-lined. Thon in tho lower left? hand.- corner ho "wroto "Bartholomew County," and across the upper right hand ho wrote: "Tho reason I put Bar? tholomew County on this is, Idou'twant it to go Columbia, South Carolina, or any other Columbia, but to Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana, and to no other Columbus." He mailed thnt letter, and tho postmaster of his towu sent it to Columbus, Ohio. WHITE SLAVES.-Some of tho New York papers are taking np tho causo of the white slaves ia tbat city, they being young saleswomen, who are compelled to be eleven hours on their feet, with only twenty minutes for luuch. They givo ft lint of the Btores in which thuso strict rules prevail, stools having been banished from behind the counters, ami sajr that many of the young ladies aro dying of consumption from such tread? mill task-work. . A funny man io Alexandria, Vn., the other evening, bade his wifo aud chil? dren good-bye, telling them that ho was going to kill himself. Ho theu jumped into the well of an old ice-houso iu that locality, but crawled out through a dry drain that opened on the side of a hill near by, and watched with delight tho efforts of a large crowd which soon col? lected to fish him out of tho water at tho bottom of tho well. A colored woman-a Mrs. Holland in St. Louis, desired her mulatto daugh? ter to marry a white man, but she pri? vately married a colored one-her mo? ther's drayman-which so incensed tho old woman, that she killed tho bride? groom with a knife. Madison was tho name of the victim. The New York Stm wonders if Grant "can ever be taught to administer tho Government with common sense." This seems to us to be a very unnecessary in? quiry.
