EDITOR: For the purpose of as? sisting to build un Episcopal Church at this stirring, enterprising, growing young village, the citizens put their hands to? gether, one day lost week, and made a festival; where all might contribute ac? cording as they liked, and while spend? ing a pleasant hour, do a deed of charity. I, too, waa there, and send a running account of what I saw. To begin at the beginning, I must mention a difficulty, whiah, as I thought, presented itself ut the off-start-there was no hall of suffi? cient capacity; the citizens, however, were not to be hindered by a trifle of that sort-an impromptu ono was made; tho'depot-shed, enclosed on all sides, from post to pillar, with Grunitovillo oloth, was turned into a hall-au airy, spacious hall, very good for a summer's night entertainment. So much for a little enterprise. In theso dull, despond? ing times, it is refreshing to drop in at a real live place like this-where people take things as they find them-when there is no hall at hand, they takoln shed; yon may. travel further and fare worso. Besides liberal home contributions, ladies from abroad lent n helping hand, but better still, they carno themselves. "Let every guest bring himself and he brings the best club." Tho shed, thus enclosed, was turned over to the ladies; now came a change in tho looks of things; fair hands are at work; festoons and wreathes of evergreen quickly and grace? fully wave overhead and oncirclo every post; Chinese lamps, transparencies of all sorts, hang from every arch; snow white tables are spread, loaded with cakes, fruits, t"T^eys, hams-onnntom). ons beauties! Carpeted saloons, with huge bowls of iced-cream, meet the eye; rock wells, covered with ivy, opon their cool mouths. I thought to myself, this begins to look li ko business; and now a blaze of light from every lamp and arch and post and pillar, gladdens, brightens, fills the whole scene, and music fills tho air-(?ie hall is ready! At every well, there ia a lassie; at every Baloon, there is another, sometimes two; what a chango I The stupid shed of yesterday, ' with boxes and bags and barrels cleared away, now looks-(pardon me, young ladies,) but it looks to me like a bride, with ber white frock on; and the pretty, sparkling, Chinese lanterns look liko diamonds in her waving tresses. Givo inc a woman, I say, always; give me a woman, when fixing is to bo done, or when difficulties aro before me. Now the doors open and the village train pours in; benevolent, kind matrons are busy at all their tables; here, I made my bow; "Let mo help you, Mr. Shandy, to turkey and ham you will find this mango very nico with your roast pig and salad." "Tbauk you, Mrs. P-, have plenty." "You must take a bit of this cake-very nico-a pre? sent from Charlotte," said Mrs. S-; "and here are some pino apples, sent from "Winnsboro; delicious, quiten treat; Mrs. B- will serve you with ice? cream." What could I do, but jnstoat? Eat for Mrs. P-; eat for Mrs. S-; eat for Mrs. B-. At a supper so various, at such a repast, Who woukl nob bo a glutton, and stick to thc last? I have said nothing about thc lemon? ade and the punch; but I drank at tho well-at both wells-drank to got cool drank to keep cool-drank to jilease thc girls-drank because I couldn't help it how could I? Hot coffee is iu demand; but there are attractions beyond hot coffee or cold meats. Ah! my young friend; you of tho mustache, and j'ou booted specimen of manhood's early prime, beware! There is danger on those carpeted saloons-danger at those ivy covered wells; you would be safer at " home, safer behind your counters; fruit? ed cakes may be sweet, but not so sweet a? Sophy's smiles; Chinese lamps may be bright, but not so bright ns Betty's eyes; wiues are red, but not so rosy red as Cora's cheeks-better spend more money with thc old ladies; or if you love fun and seek a merry past ?nie, trade at the grab table; hero the girls offer great bargains, and here the boys do congre? gate; what a buying and selling-what peals of laughter-what jolly faces and what joyous hearts-"once again, who would not bo a boy?" I am not too old to admire beauly, and would gladly givo a pon and ink sketch of many fair faces that I saw, both at tho festival and at the charades, which were gotten up as a separate entertainment for tho same be? nevolent purpose; but this, propriety forbids. I cannot, however, omit to expre?? my high appreciation of tho cha? rade performances; the characters were well sustained and the audienco certainly well pleased; it provoked much innocent mirth and contributed greatly to the evening's entertainment. SHANDY. A correspondent of tho Charleston Re? publican writes from Colleton that the Coroner of that County has ascertained beyond a doubt that James Dorman was drowned while swimming the Couibnkee River, near Hutchinson's Island; and that Brown, the supposed murderer, had been for three days dragging the river and had finally recovered tho body. . It is said of ono of tho burlesquo blondes: As an actress, she is equal to the great bulk of female stars now tra? veling in the drnmatio milky way; as a dresser, she has ever been in the front ranks; and as an undresser, where thc character requires it, sho is equal to tho emergency. At ono of tho largest theatres in Now York city, the audience numbered just forty persons all told, and of these, pro? bably one-third were free admissions. The fact shows the indisposition of peo? ple to crowd together while tho heat is so intense. The directors of tho Air Lino Railroad, at their meeting in Atlanta, have deter? mined to do away with their old name, and take upon themselves the name of the "Riohmond and Atlanta Railroad Company." ??>ooiai Aiotloes. It appears that a mushroom growth of BO called "Bittere," ia springing up under differ out names in various localities, particularly in tho Southern and Western StnteB, which tho vcbderB have the hardihood to recom? mend to easy-going pcoplo upon whom they think they can impose, aa a" substitute for Hosteller's Stomach Ritters, long recognized by every class as the purest and best medi? cated stimulant and invigorant tho world al? fords. Thc concoctions referred to being composed of worthless material, oiler a larger margin for profit than that Celebrated Tonic, and hence tho anxiety of dollar-worshipping deal? ers to foist them upon tho public in its place.
