The immense crowd of both sexes from all Beotions of the Union assembled in the University Hall to-night, to hear the address before the literary societies\by Hon. George H. Pendleton, of ?njo. In coming forward, he was reoeived with applause. The subject of the address was tho constant, unremitting progross of tho human race in everything which tends to its civilization and elevation; that this progress is the result of tho ef? forts of individual men; that every hu? man lifo aids or retards it, aud tho con? sequent doty of overy mau is to develop to the largest extent overy capacity of mind and soul and body, that ho may contribute his just sharo to tho gcuerul advancement of the race. This main idea was onforoed by historic illustra? tions, comparisons of tho civilization of the world at different epochs aud in different countries. Ho alluded to tho foundation of the University and to tho lives and characteristics of itsthreo great patrons, the splendid trinity of Jeflerson, Madison and Monroe. lu the courso of his remarks, Mr. Pen? dleton made the following reference to national affairs: It is true we nro building np States in the wilds of the Rocky Mountains with wonderful rapidity; it is true we span the continent with rail and wiro, and send our thoughts in on instant across the waters of old ocean itself; it is true we are advancing with unequalled speed towards the snmmit of national power and renown. So much the greater reason why we should not lng behind in tho pathway of purely intellectual and lite? rary ominence. So much tho greater reason that we should at all times re? member that there is something better than national prosperity, something worthier our efforts than physical honor and accumulated-wealth. Let us lind with hope an incentive in tho fact that the ages of greatest pbysicnl activity have been those of tho greatest intellec? tual impulses. The true test of the worthiness of the age is the worthiness of ourselves, which each thinkiug man should put to himself in tho secrecy of his heart: . 'Learning by experience, teaching by example." The address gave great satisfaction to all hearers, and Mr. Pendleton was fre? quently interrupted with applause dur? ing its delivery. TUE PRESENTMENT.-We publish in full to-day tho presentment of tho grand1 jnry, for the June term of our court. We ask tho attention of tho press throughout the State, to it. We regard this as a most important public docu? ment. It is, in truth, tho presentment of a colored grand jury, asthepannel was composed of twelve colored and four white persons. This unanimous pre? sentment is unsparing in its denuncia? tions of villainy and exposes the pecula? tions and thefts of the County Commis? sioners, in plain and unmistakable lan? guage. It shows that the colored man, when withdrawn from tho infamous white influence to which ho hus bceu subjeoted, is not tho countenancer of rascality nor the friend of rascals. It inspires hopo for tho futuro aud encou? rages tho expectation, that ere long, the administration of government will pass into the hands of those who are both morally and mentally competent. It indicates thnt tho rule of mean while men, is drawing to a close. It writes upon tho walls of their political castles, the prophetic word TEICEE-"Thou art weighed in the balances and arl found wanting. "-Darlington Democrat. Tho Philadelphia Ledger, referring to several recent fires, remarks: "There is no longer any room for doubt that greasy and oily rags, or cot? ton waste that has been used for wiping oiled machinery, or rags soaked with benziuo or paint, will, if kept in piles, or hid away in closets or nuder stair? ways, or in othor nooks nnd holes, gene? rate sufficient heat to take Are aud burn whatever is within reach. This danger is greater in hot weather than nt any other time. Such stuff should not be allowed to accumulate about any house or factory, and, least of all when the thermomotor is ranging from eighty to u hundred. One of tho military commanders having offered a reward for each brigand's head brought in, the sup? ply soon becamo so extensive, that sus? picious were aroused. Inquiry was set on foot, and disclosed tho fact that with an oyo to tho "main ehance," tho so called brigand hunters made raids into neighboring villages, plundered them, and then turned the heads of their vic? tims to aoconnt. A singing socioty in Vevay, Switzer land, went ont on a little pleasure party to the mountains, on tho 31st of May, and abont thirty of their number were ont trout fishing on ono of tho deep mountain lukos on a raft. When they reached tho centre of tho luko, the raft suddenly broke npart, and twenty of them wero drowned. Some of the most prominent persons of Vevay aro among tho drowned. - RESCUED FB?U A DESERT ISLAND. \? Six survivors of the ship Mercurius, from San Francisco, lost off the Brazi? lian coast, have been brought to Liver? pool. They were rescued from a desert island, upon which thoy had remained fifty days. While a barber is arrested in Maine for keeping opcu shop on Sunday, a Massachusetts judge decides that shav? ing is a work of necessity, and that har? bors cannot bo punished for professional labor at any timo. Mr. Nathan L'nrrott, an aged citizen of Fairfield, died on the 25th ult. BAD EFFECT OF POLITICS.-In Cobden, III., lost week, two f emules discussed politics, became enraged, nnd ono seized a knife and fatally stubbed the other. In view of steamboats aud telegraph in tho Holy Land, a Paris paper asks: "How long will it be before a cotton factory is established upon tho banks of (he Jorduu, and thc echoes of the hills of Palestine awakened by the shrill whistle of the iron horse?" A lunatic in a New England town waa discovered, ono day last week, at tho grave of his father in tho cemetery, hav? ing dug to tho cofliu.
