FULLY.-Montana has a citizen named Miss Given Evans, who, as may readily be inferred from her uame, is by birth a Welsh woman. About a month ago she entered tho United States District Court in Montana, and asked to have a natu? ralization certificate made out for her. The puzzled functionary settled his spectacles on his nose, examined tho ap? plicant with surprise, and then plunged into United Stales statutes, in which ho found no legal reason why a womau Bhould not bo duly naturalized, and so Miss Evans received her papers, with which sho boldly went to tho laud office of the Territory. There she asked a clork to make out her declaratory state? ment to pro-empt 1G0 acres of public land. The gentleman, like tho other, was somewhat astonished by her request, but, examining authorities, he found no reason to repel the applicant, aud her certificate was duly tiled as No. 1,000. Tho energetic lady then went to work on her newly acquired land, and built a house, aud set about to improvo her farm, fencing it, and otherwise showing that, having it, sho intended to keep it. She now hus a cow, a yoko of oxen and all tho usual farmiug tools generally used by pioneers. Her lund is in Deer Lodgo Valley, and some day thc Northern Pa? cific Railroad will run closo to it, making it quite a little fortune. -o- ? ? Imprudent-promising your doctor a legacy. THE WHITES AND THE MILITIA.-Tho Winnsboro' News, in noticing the parade last week of two companies of colored militia, recently organized in that Conn* ty, takes occasion to urge the white peo pie, in ita usual philosophical style, to overcome all squeamishness, and to take their part in the militia system of the State. It says: " 'The right of tho citizen to bear ru-ius' is a constitutional right, as sacred as 'tho right to vote,' and nobody now objects to it. We, a your ago, expressed our conviction, too, tbat no conflict of tho races would come of its exercise in the organization of thc militia, and that tho whites, if they preferred not to go into thc militia organization, would sim? ply pay tho flues. Wo reit?ralo that opinion to-day. But we, at the same time, adviso tho whites to organizo com? panies, nud obtain field appoiutmonts. A mixed militia, it has uow becomo as evident to us, we oro going to have, as it is evident to everybody else that a mixed Lcgislnturo we both have already and are going to havo. Organizo at once, therefore, and havo ns good a militia or? ganization as possible." FATAL AFFRAY.-A fatal rencounter occurred ono day last week, at thc Mag? netic Iron Oro Company's works, iu Spartanburg County, between Ezekiel McAbco, (white,) and Simon Latham, (colored,) both of whom wcro laborers at tho works, in which Latham was shot in the abdomen aud killed. It was a personal quarrel, both wero sober, aud wo understand the killing was clearly iu self-defence. MoAbeo is iu jail at this placo at present, but will bo triod iu Spartanburg at the July Court. [Un ion v Hie Tim cs. COMMENCEMENT AT ins FEMALE COL? LEGE.-Wo take great pleasure in an? nouncing a rich treat to tho friends of the college, at the approaching com? mencement, on tho Gth July. Gen. Wade Hampton has promised, if possible, to address tho college proper, and Col. A. C. Haskell has positively accepted tho invitation of the Alumni to deliver the anniversary address. Wo earnestly hope that Geu. Hamp? ton will be able to come, as we are sure there is no part of South Carolina which would givo him a more hearty welcome. [Laurensviile Herald. TUE AIR-LINE RAILROAD.-Next Sa? turday will be, in our opinion, ouo of tho most important days in the history of Greenville city and of tho County. The vote will decide, first, whether we aro a people capable of understanding our material interests, and acting according? ly. We have met with few, very few, citizens of the County who do not ap? prove of tho voto for subscription, but as tho day of action comos, wo trust that none will bo nbsont from tho polls with their votes and their influence in its fa? vor. Every friend of tho road, of every class and color, eau exert an influence, and [should not fail to do so. Tho main thing is to turn out ou tho day and voto. The matter is to bo decided by votes. We can vote ourselves a thriving, prosperous people, if we will. We sincerely believo that tho single item of blackberries would fully justify tho subscription asked of tho County. There was one County in North Carolina, lying on tho railroad lending to New York and other Northern cities, that, year before last, sent sixty thousand dol? lars' worth of blackberries to New York. Greenville and other counties in this State, on such a road, could do the samo thing.-Greenville Enterprise. WAKING Ur THE WRONG MAN.-A fool, a barber, and a bald-headed man were traveling together.
