Friends were invited freely, a crowded hou?o was looked for, and probably the programme would have been successful? ly carried out but for a fatal error-an unlooked-for cause, that had a most dis? astrous effect. It happened, whether by a dispensation of Providence or not, can? not be surmised, that exactly opposito to the religious edifice wherein thu happy couple were to join hands, and which, by the way, was dimly lighted, was an? other church, brilliantly illuminated, preparatory to a session of protracted prayer meeting, for the beueiit of con? verts and others interested in tho welfare of their souls. As is usually tho case, the brightest light drew tho largest au? dience, which, sad to say, embraced uiue tentba of the wedding guests, who calm? ly seated themselves, unwittingly verify? ing the truth of the adage. "Where iguo rance is bliss 'tis folly to bo wise." Tho wedding was ended in tho other church, and a half-dozen witnessed tho happy scene jost as the majority of the guests opposite were awakening to n realizing sense of the mistake that had been com? mitted so laughably. There was no help for them, and so instead of listening to the marriage service, they were com? pelled to spend two hours uud moro in sympathizing commuuion with confess? ing sinners and over-burdeued con? sciences, all anxious to lay their expe? riences before their brethren. Tho joke was an excellent one, but our Jim says he does not know on whom it reflects most-the couple, the guests, or the meeting. The Mexican Congress adjourned ou May 31st. President Juarez, in his clos? ing message, states that tho rebellions in various quarters have been ni most en? tirely suppressed. Tho earthquake in the interior, on Moy 11th, destroyed al? most the whole town of Miahulla, and caused considerable loss of life. The civil government they have in Mexico is worse than their earthquakes. A ypuDg lady of Harrisburg, Pa., died recently of hydrophobia from the bite of a dog eight or niue weeks previous. "When ber condition was hopeless, stupe? fying drugs were administered to her, and she was secured to a sofa until she expired. Colonel Pratt, of Prattsville, N. Y.t is said to have given to 'uiblie and private charities in the course of his life, $1,000 000. A Western locomotive ran over a man who was sitting on a rail reading a paper. THE following extracts from an "Ordinance regulating the ?Otting up of Steam En? gines and the establishment of Manufactories in the City of Columbia," ratified October 23. 1868, is published for tho information of all conoernod. * * * # # * # * SECTION 1. That hereafter, any person or persons desiring to eieet any Steam Engine or Manufactory in which steam power ia used, within tho corporate limits of tho City of Co? lumbia, shall make application in writing to the City Council, setting f?rth tho place in which it is proposed to put up Haid Engine or erect said Manufactory, and tho nature and extent of tho proposed establishment. SEC. 2. Upon complaint being made to Coun? cil of the violation of tbii Ordinance, the of? fending party shall bo heard before Council, and Council may permit the erection of enid Steam Engino, Ac, or cause same to bc abated.
