They axe to bear "the heat and burden of the day." Thoy aro expected to bo no carpet knights, but with ungloved hands, to handle tho authors of our troubles. In this work, they will have the sympathy of every genuine will wishor of the State. Beform can hurt no honest man. It can injure no sub? stantial interests. Let ns havo matters in the Slate well and thoroughly ven? tilated. Let na, if we oan, throw a flood of light in upon cortaiu dark transac? tions. Judge Carpenter and General Butler will have dono our people a great .and substantial service, if they can let the waters of BEFOBM into the Augoan Btables of the State. Nor will they get ?he hearty sympathy of our good peoplo . alone. Even Northern Republicanism is . fast getting to be ashamed of its allies in i these parts, and tho country at largo is ..fast learning the lesson that reform herc is but the cause of good and decent government, and is outside of mere party considerations. Even tho Now York Tribune, with its ..Republicanism" deeply ingrained, thinks that radicalism is coming to a pretty pass, when it plays such fantastical tricks as it is doing hero in South Carolina. Mr. Greeley thinks that what he considered sublime, is fast growing to bo ridiculous, and he de? mands that this universal negro suffrage ought to be redeemed at least by uuivor val white amnesty. It needs some saving grace, ho thinks. But perhaps Mr. Horace Greeley is not aware that wo havo hero in South Carolina a secret, oath-bonuii lenguo, that holds its mem? bers with an iron grasp, aud takes away from them anything liko personal inde? pendence-au association which, as Gen ?ral Butler suggosted, can make, or has heretofore made, its members voto for anything or anybody. But Mr. Greeley is on the right track, and wo welcomo him, as well as tho New York If al ion am] other radical journalists, iuto thc ranks of our political reformers. The Alt?ren? of Gen. Wadu Hampton A Bciiutlrul Tribute from the Living to the Dead. We have read, with much interest, tho address of our townsman, Goueral Wado Hampton. Tho Washington Light In? fantry was one of the gallant companies that Charleston sent into tho war. At tho close of tho war, or some period thereafter, tho surviving members formed a charitable association, for tho noble purpose of keeping alive a veteran or? ganization, and, at the samo time, of ministering to tho wants of their crip? pled comrades, aud of affording aid to the widows aud orphans of the slain. This association resolved to erect a monu? ment to tho memory of their honored dead, and as was meet, General Hamp? ton was selected to bo tho orator ou thc occasion. Ho spoko, and spoke well. We have no sympathy with that spirit which, in any respect, ignores tho memo? ry of our past, in its connoctiou with our Confederate cause. Most heartily, there? fore, do we receive tho eulogistic utter? ances of tho orator upon the occasion under consideration. Passiug in review thc cause in which the dend of thc Washington Light Iufautry fell, and the battles in which thoy fought nud bled, vindicating tho motive of their action, aud tho spirit that impelled them, most eloquently does ho urge tho living to fidelity to their lineage, their principle! and their renown. Those of us disposed to encourage common sense nud a conciliatory spirit in tho colored race, are reminded thal "ono swallow does not mako a summer' -that is, because a colored mau hen .and there strikes for reform and harnio uious relationship to the Southern whites, it does not follow that this will prevail ni a general spirit. Whittemore's case created a slight sen sation in Cmgres:', yesterday. It will bi considered on Tuesday, the 21st. Bin GAN DAG E.-The jokes of the Eu? ropean brigands aro being imitated in South Carolina. A correspondent of the Charleston Nowa, writing from Marion, S.O., nnder dato of the 16th, says: Tho btore of Captain W. S. Ellerbe and Mr. Samuel Watson was robbed in a manner which almost causes admira? tion from the peculiar boldness exhibited by tho thieves. Captain Thos. E. Stan? ley had charge of tho storo, and wan, as usual, attonding to his business, when at about 8 p. m., he was seized before any possible resistance oould bo made, forced to givo the robbers tho keys to the safe, and, with his wife and his cook, locked in tho counting-room of the storo. The robbers fastened the windows securely, and posting guards, they commenced plundering. As a customer would oome ho would bo siczod, his lifo threatened in case of out-cry, and marched into this uondescript jail. Eightoeu persons wero finally thus immured. Mrs. Stauloy's infant, in the dwelling house adjoining, commenced to ory, and in obedience to her earnest entreaties, Capt. S. requested the robbers to let him go after his little child, and also that of his cook, in her house. Tho robbers humanely granted this request, guarding tho Captain to tho houses and back to his placo of im? prisonment. When they wero ready to leave they handed tho prisoners a lighted candle, and after warning them they would be shot in case they attempted to como out bofore day, they went off. taking the horso of Mr. "Watson to assist them in takiug off their booty. Thoy made directly for tho North Carolina line. At Mr. John II. Moody's they stopped, and took two horses, and at Mr. W. J. Pago's they took two moro. Messrs. Ellerbe A Watson's loss is not definitely known, ns the goods were near? ly all takon from tho shelves and strewn on tho floor-the robbers ouly takiug off what suited them, this bciug for tho most part ready-made clothing, ammuni? tion, shoos, &o. They obtained 8100 in money. Tho imprisoned party succeeded, at 1 a. m., (15th instant,) iu drawing a staple and releasing themselves, when tho alarm was giveu, and pursuit commenced. Wo much fear tho robbors aro too far ahead, for if they left immediately on handing iu tho candle, they ure far ahead of their pursuers. Mr. Shaw, a Deputy State Coustablo, is also in pursuit. This is an account of one of thc most daring robberies our Couuty hus over known at any time. The party aro sup? posed to bc a part of tho Robeson Coun? ty, North Carolina, band of outlaws. Thc hand thrust in with the lighted caudle was white, but the entire band, so far as seen, were blackened. Tho number of thieves is variously estimated from live to ten. Since writing tho above, Mr. Shaw hus returned. Tho horses seemed to Lave been turued loose, after their services were no longer needed, and were mot rata ruing-so that much was saved. The band was traced beyondAshpole, N. C., near the tlou of tho Robeson outlaws, thus leuviug no dubt that they were t he robbers. This is uot tho first out? rage the people havo sustained at their bauds, and yet tho Executive of North Carolina has not exorcised its power to bring the wretches to justice. IMPORTANT TO GUARDIANS OF MINORS wno ABB PENSIONERS.-Tho Secretary of the Interior has decided that in caso of plurality of childrou, each child is en? titled to tho two dollars per month ad? ditional until it reaches tho ago of six? teen, under tho provisions of tho Act of July 25, 180G, aud to carry ont this de? cision, the Commissioner of Pousions directs that all certificates to miuor chil? dren containing theolause, "It is further provided, that when ouly ono of tho obovo childrou is eutitled, the additional sum of two dollars per annum shall cease to be paid from that dato," shall bo re? turned to LisolBco for re-issue to exclude the above clauso. Thc postmastor at Sau Antonio, Texas, was not long since puzzled by the re? ceipt of a letter from New Orleans, directed to "My Mammy, living in tho city of San Antonio." Oue day, how over, a small, fierce-looking old woman appeared at the post oflico window, say? ing, "Mister, havo you got any letter there from my Johuny?" Tho letter ad? dressed to "My Mammy" was at ouce given her at a vonturo, and tho suspi? cion that it was intendod for her, proved correct. MUNICIPAL ELECTION.-An election for town olficors came off on yesterday, nud resulted in the choice of tho Democratic ticket, all whito, as follows: For Iutcnd aut-Dr. ti. A. Huggins. For Wardens -B. P. Barron, M. Beni, CK P. McKa gen and S. A. Rigby. Both parties evinced considerable interest, and tho contest was quito spirited -everything passed off, however, in a quiet ami peaceable manner.-Clarendon /'ress. Whilo traveling with his train the other day, ho took them out to eut his lunch, or rathor gum it. This finished, ho wrapped up tho debris of the meal iu a newspaper and let it fly. But ah! his poarly teeth wore in that paper, and he expected to meet his lady lovo at the noxt depot. A KEUOSENE HORROR.-On Tuesday night, in Portsmouth, Va., a fierce fire broke aut in the grocery storo of Mr. Harvey Barnes, and before tho confla? gration could be arrestod, threo dwell? ings aud tho storo and contents were destroyed, aud two children, asleep in a room above the store, perished in the flames; supposed to havo beon caused by the bursting of a keroseno lamp. A Missouri paper, the Middletown Banner, tells a horrible story, how. a eiroas-band, riding in that Village on top of the enge of lions, were precipitated among tho infuriated beasts, by the j horses becoming frightened, and dashing tho carriage against a large stone; and how three of the band were killed, and j half devoured, and fonr others terribly lacerated. All this on the 12th of last month. A little boy, six years old, writing from Washington to his grand-father in this city, says: "Ma took me to tho Presi? dent's to seo Spotted Tai!. I don't like Spotted Tail. Ile is a nasty, dirty mau. In tho middle of tho levee, when Gen. Grant was talking to him and nil tho Indies were looking at him, he unbut? toned his pantaloons aud fanned his stomach with his shirt." GENERAII AMNESTY.-Universal am? nesty was promised to accompany uni-I versai negro suffrage. Tho negro part of tho plan has como to pass, but only eight radicals could be persuaded in tho House of Iteprosentatives, ou Monday last, to vote for emancipating white men. Well, to quoto Red Cloud's note on tho situa? tion : "Tho Great Spirit will judge these things hereafter."-Constitutionalist. A Now York paper lately announced that Olive Logan had "married her unolo." What tho editor wrote was "sprained her ankle." Tho compositor cannot bo blamed; Miss Olive is as likely to do ono thiug as another, and he set it up "tho way he thought it mude souse." Two men belonging to Noye's circus wero eating together in Yazoo City, Mis? sissippi, wheu oue of them arose, put? ting some provisions in his pucket. This provoked tho remark from the other that negroes acted that way. He was shot dead for his criticism. No Biiiij.-The grand jury yesterday afternoon threw out thc indictment agaiust Messrs. J. J. Hoyden, C. H. I Ru?llo and John Aytes, who had been chargod with murder by a coroner's jury, of which Thomas Jefferson Mackey was tho foreman. - Charleston Courier. Nearly fifty guests at thc principal hotel in Los Angeles, Cal., were poisoned recently, and three employees in the hotel have been arrested on suspicion. Tho guests were nil very sick, but fortu? nately no deaths occurred. Joseph Henriqncs has boca held to bail iu $5,OOO iu Philadelphia, tu answer a ehavgo of falsely imprisoning an insane brother in o private room iu hus house for tho past sixteen years. A colored man, named John Dennett, while under the influence of liquor, fell in tho canal, at Augusta, Ga., and was drowued.
