RELIGIOUS FANATICISM IN RUSSIA-A HORRIBLE SCENE.-Tbe fearful lengths to which religious fanaticism will carry an ignorant and superstitions people, is illustrated by a sect in Russia known as Marelsohioks, who believe and practico the dootrine of self-mutilation, and not nnfrequentlj that of self-immolation, holding that thereby they are at once translated to a world of never-ending bliss. It is related ?that forty peasants, members] of the sect of Marelschicks, having practiced their rites until thoy had come to the oonviotion that they had. attained to a condition of perfect purity, which, however, might be endangered if they remained any longer on earth, de li bur a tc ly planned to sacrifice each other's life. They proceeded to a barn situated at some distance from the village, taking with thom a block of wood, a cleaver, and a rope. When all had formed in so lemn array around tho block, ono step ped forward and laid his head upon it; another came np, seized tbe cleaver, and cat his head off; the second one was do capitated by the third, and so on. Not a cry of agony was heard, and thirty-nine victims lay weltering in their blood. Tho fortieth of these fanatics-a merchant was yet alive; two of his sons lay dead at his feet, it was his turn to die, and for him the rope was reserved. When he had already put the noose around his neck he was overcome by remorse, as ho told his wife nothing of what WOB going on, and ho felt troubled at leaving her alone on earth. He went back to the village, whence he conducted his wife to the barn. When she saw the horrible spectacle, and her sons dead on tho ground, her cries and lamentations at? tracted some persons who chanced to be nearby. They reported the fact to the authorities, and the survivor of the forty was sent to Siberia. REVISION OP THE BIBLE-THE PRO? POSED WORK IN ENGLAND.-The London correspondent of the New York Times says; Tho Convocation of Tork refuses to join with that of Canterbury in bringing about a revision of the English .Bible. For this reason, a royal commission is out of the question, but the Convocation of Canterbury has resolved to unkertake the work, and ask tbe aid of all religious denominations throughout the English speaking world. The Dean of Canter? bury wished to include the Jews also, so far os the Old Testnment is concerned. Therefore, every one who bas an amend? ment to propose, should send it to the Archbishop of Canterbury, post paid. Tbe present version was a long time in pre? paration, and after it was published, it was a full half century before it came into general use. A new version might luke longer, considering the violent opposition of men, like Lord Shafts? bury, to any change. It is said that an adequate revision would, on an average, change one word in every verso of the New Testament; and many whole versos, and some that are considered very im? portant ones would bo left out alto? gether. Still, as far as I can see, the errors are not so important as many suppose, and tho interpolations are, in nine cases in ten, merely explanatory, and many have been first introduced as marginal notes, and afterwards care? lessly embodied in the text. But in a rapidly-changing language, every trans? lation requires frequent revision. Words and phrases havo not now tho same mean? ing that thoy had two centuries ago.
