"MADAME DE VARTELLE.

A little Inter in the same day, Madame
d'Orgerel informed her brother thar, as
she had no doubt her death also would
be a violent one, she wished to dispose
of her wealth while it-nvas yet in her
power to do BO. She accordingly be?
queathed all she possessed, in equal por?
tions, to the orphan child of M. deNiore
and to Madame de Vartelle's boy-in
case of death, the survivor of tho two to
inherit all. The old man followed her
example, and, after making a handsome
provision for his daughters, left every?
thing to tho young Do Nioro, with rever?
sion to his cousin Ambroiso do Vartelle.
The "widow, being apprised of these tes?
tamentary dispositions, wept abundant
tears of gratitude, and promising before
high Heaven to be a loving, tender and
devoted mother to the orphan.
Two or three weeks elapsed without
any further mishap. It wrns mid-night,
and M. de M-was sitting in his libra?
ry, poring over some important papers,
-when the door softly opened, and Saint
Jean glided into the room, seemingly
more dead than alive.
"Ah, sir," he exclaimed, "we are all
loBtl I have not been able to tend you,
and now Madama d'Orgerel must die."
"What do you mean, fellow?" cried
his master, in astonishment, not untan?
gled with alarm.
"I will tell you, sir. Wo were sitting |
np rather later than usual, when ItoRclte,
(Madame d'Orgeiel's lady's maid,) told
ua a secret which even you, sir, may not
yet know."
"What?"
"Madame is about to retire to her line
chateau in Burgundy."
M. do M-here made a gesture of
surprise, and Saint Jean continued:
"This news set us off chatting about
many things, when mid-night struck,
and we nil hurried oft' to bed. I was
mounting the spiral stair-case, and had
reached the third floor, when it seemed
as if some one stood before me. I
looked up, and again beheld my dear
master, but this time angry, even furi?
ous. He called mo a wretch, u scoun?
drel, a faithless slave, and struck me
some violent blows on tho arm with a
stick he held in bia hand. 'Go,' ho
cried, 'go to my father, and tell him that
I command you to take my child from
his nurse, and convey him to a place of
safety. My aunt's death, now nigh at
hand, will satisfy him that I am not a
false prophet.' "
M. do M-, without replyiug, unco?
vered Saint Jean's arm, and, to his
horror, saw that it was seamed with
fresh wheals, suffused with blood, aud
indicating considerable severity of pun?
ishment. Such tangible proofs of super?
natural interposition were not to be gain?
said. Incredulity yielded to substantial
evidence, and tho following morning
Saint Jean set off, as he himself gave
out, for his native village in Lower
Brittany. In realty, ho proceeded
straight to Berry, furnished with full
authority and instructions, which he ex?
ecuted with intelligence aud discretion.
Two days later, Madame d'Orgerel's
lady's moid was missing. At 2 o'clock,
one morning, a terribie [explosion took
place in a room adjoining those oocn
pied by M. de M-and his sister. The
household, roused from their lirst sleep,
rushed to tho spot whence the report
had proceeded, and came upon a scene
of dreadful confusion. Tho partition
walls had been rent asunder like so
much paste-board, the furniture was
strewn about in fragments, the window
frames had been blown ont, and Madame
d'Orgerel was found lying in a corner,
apparently dead of fright, for no marks
of violence could be discovered evcu
when the body was opened. As for tho
old magistrate, he escaped with a few
bruises of no great consequence, but his
spirit was utterly brokeu. From the
stove in Madame de Vartelle's apart?
ment, a packet was taken containing
gnu-powder, bullets, sci ups of iron and
bits of glass. The villain had doubtless
been disturbed, and had had no oppor
tnuity of completing his nefarious pre?
parations. It was generally believed
that the missing lady's maid h id been
the instrument bj* which all these fear?
ful outrages had been committed. The
greatest sympathy was naturally evinced
by all classes of tho population of Paris,
and M. do M-had at least tho proud
consolation of knowing that all good
men loved, revered and pitied him.
