STATEN ISL-AND BRIDGE.-Gov. Hoff?
man has attached his signature to what
is known ns the Staten Island Bridge
bill, which has consequently become a
law. The effect of this is not generally
understood, although it will be of great
moment, both as regards the facilities
which it aims to supply, and tho changed
aspect it will impart to Now York harbor.
It is intended to carry a bridge on piles
from the shore near New Brighton, and
about opposite Constable's Point, over
the rocks and shallows, past Bobbins'
Beef Light and Bedloe's Island, to Ellis'
Island, which is about as near the Bat?
tery aa Jersey City. On this bridge,
which will be somewhat less than five
miles long, a railroad is to be construct?
ed, on which it is expected the distanco
from Staten Island to Ellis Island will
be traversed in about ten minutes. Fer?
ry-boats will run from tho latter point to
the Battery in three or four minutes
more.
A Joliet woman has origiunl and pro?
nounced viewB on female suffrage, which
she expresses in this way:
"I don't just believe in these new wo?
men notions. I have raised six boys
four of them vote now, and the others
will soon be old enough. Then I will
have six votes. Now theso good-for
nothing women who have fooled their
time away and never raised a single boy,
come around and want every woman to
vote for herself. I don't believe in such
nonsense. I have raised my Rix boys,
and I am going to have every ono vote
for me. Those women who go lecturing
around the country, instead of raising
boys, have no business to vote any way."
