THE DAILY 'Lot oar Just Censure PHOMX. Attend the True Event." '3Y J. A. SELBY COLUMBIA. S. C.. SUNDAY MORNING. MAY 29. 1870 VOL. VI-NO. 01. A HORRIBLE CRIME.-RETRIBUTIVE JUS? TICE.-We are informed that n horrible crime woe committed by a negro man, anon the person of a white lady, named Mrs. Newman, in the neighborhood of Greenville, Kentucky, on last Friday. Ia the morning, the lady told her hus? band that she and her son were going to spend the day at a neighbor's houso, and if they did not return that night, he need j not feel uneasy. Between her own and her neighbor's farm, she was mot by the negro, who violated her person, then murdered her and her son. Tho next morning, the husband started to his neighbor's farm to escort his wifo and son home, and found them on the road? side brutally murdered. Tho nows soon spread-men oolleoted-investigated the matter, and soon were satisfied os to who -was the guilty wretch. Ho was arrested that day, and made a full confession of his guilt. Whilst in tho hands of an of? ficer, he was taken possession of by tho excited populace, who, at once, decided to smear him with tar and burn him nt the stake; but whilst the party appoint? ed to procure tho tar was gone, tho popu? lace became impatient and hung the negro to a tree until ho was dead. His heud was then severed from the body and posted in the public squaro of Green? ville, on a stake set in tho ground, iu front of tho Court House, and no ono was allowed to remove it. Tho leaders of the populace are said to bo radicals; soothe radical papers cannot rai.se a howl this time in relation to one of their party being murdered by Southern Ku Klux! As for us, we care not who were tho lead? ers, they did a deed that deserves com? mendation. Let summary justice be inflioted in all such cases, before they get in tho hands of tho lawyers. AN INFERNAL- CRIME.-The crime charged against a man named Lange, a dealer in picturo frames in this city, is one that should give him u prc eminence in the criminal catalogue, for diabolical intent. He shipped a box in April last, on the New Orleans steamer, and secured an insurance on it of 81,600, and the box proved to have been prepared with explosive and inflammable material, and was only prevented from burning tho ship by the watchfulness and activity of the captain, In the box wero vessels of alcohol, gasoline and turpentine, andfiro was apparently to have been set to these by a chemical that would explode with slight friction. The friction was pro? vided for by mice shut in a box, who, in gnawing their way out, wero to fire tho train that might have destroyed the Bhip and all her company at sea. Here, then, is, if the charge provo true, a man who deliberately contrives that awful calami? ty, fire, on a ship nt sea-contrives the possible frightful death of twenty or thirty persons-to secure the small prize? of $1,600 insurance money. Ho should be tried by a jury of sea-captains and sailors. It is a remarkable coincidence, that this crime was attempted against the steamer George Washington, while some years since a crime of the same nature was contrived in tho shipment of goods on the Mississippi steamer Martha Washington.-New York Herald. EXTRAVAGANCE OF TUE ADMINISTRA? TION.-In tho debate in the House, Wednesday, on the naval appropriation bill, Mr. Heck, of Kentucky, submitted some facts and figures of the extrava? gance of this administration that are simply astonishing. He said ho was prepared to show that the Navy Depart? ment had expended, within tho fiscal year, 838,000,000, making an excess of expenditures over the appropriation of 821,000,000. This surplus amount was used from the proceeds of sules of Go? vernment property. In tho Treasury Department, tuero were l.GUO more em? ployees than the law allowed, being an increase of 600 over the illegal excess in April, 1869. 82,000,000 nearly were re? quired to pay these yearly salaries. The pretense, said he, that tho Government is being economically administered, is a fraud and a cheat. REVOLUTION.-Mankind is never at rest, because always wicked. And so of human governments; they aro never per? fect, and always want mending. Hence, revolution is chronic, nnd just now it is not only "procressing" in tho great re? public of tho United States, but also in Europe. In quiet little Portugal tho Duke of Saldanha, over eighty years of age, hended a mob who farced tho primo ministerio resign; and from Italy we hear that three frigates are thought uot too great a force to keep Garibaldi from leaving Cuprern; Paris is unquiet; at Rome they look for a Bourbon move? ment; nnd altogether the volcano is rum? bling. TUE BITER BIT.-Tho pious Forney keeps up a howl over the impudence of tho Judiciary Committee in vending for his ledger and examining it with a micro? scope. Tho Press says : "If legislative authority gives sanction to such proceedings, what is tho scope of tho legislative power of a municipal representative and deliberative body?" If Forney can raise such a yell over the inspection of nu old ledger, how shall he dare, in future, to commend tho beastly interference by Congress with great States. The Southern people and their institutions can be outraged in any way, but no polluting linger must be laid on Forney's old ledgor. Tho ark of the covenant is a trifle to Forney's old ledger.-Augusta Constitutionalist, The Greenville Mountaineer hears it rumored that any new recruits who may join tho radical ranks will bo received "on probation," and will have "to bide a timo" before they get any pap. The Mountaineer, therefore, says: "This is a wiso move on the part of tho Republi? cans; but it is a bad ono for tho opposite party, who are thus deprived of the uso of ono of thc sluices through which much that was corrupt and umelinblo wns sloughed o?r."
