been to quote lovingly, "Wherever, free?

awoke from the long slumber of ages and

the waters of the blue Atlantic as a greet?

in which the sage of Ashland was held in
the hearts of his countryman the people
of hts Commonwealth have been slow to
speak to strangers of the skeleton in his
household, though in tho homes of the
State the ?ad story has been n household
word.'
?Yesterday morning, our special tele?
grams announoed tho end of a weary life
in stating that Theodore, eldest sou of
Henry Clay, had died in the Lexington
Lunatic Asylum, after a long confine?
ment. The record of his blasted life is
^ briefly thus:
At thirty years of age, Theodoro Clay
was a promising lawyer. Ho was the
image and the hope of tho statesman
whose fame was on every tongne. It is
true that there wero whispers of wild liv?
ing and of indifferent morals, that some?
what tinged the fair repute and even
darkened the future prospects of this
soion of a noble house. Still it was
hoped that these were but tho results of
youth, and would bo cast asido when
circumstances called upon tho matured
man to assert himself nnd mako his
talent felt in the community.
It was at this turning point in his life
that Theodore Clay began to pursue,
with an unwearied perseverance that
caused his friends great unnsiness, a
?roung lady of Lexington, whom ho had
ong loved hopelessly. The object of his
attachment, who is at the present mo?
ment one of the brightest ornaments ol
Kentucky society, repulsed, firmly but
kindly, every attention offered by the
infatuated young man, after his meaning
had becomo manifest. It was of no use:
he would not bo refused, and followed
his fair fate in the streets by day and
wandered in tho neighborhood of hei
home by night in an annoying mannor,
until at last it became evident that he
"was not all there"-to usc the soil
phrase by which a kindly peasantry ex
presses insanity.

daughter at the pistol's point, until a
last the wretched truth could no longei
be ignored and confinement in tin
asylum became a stern necessity. Tin
was accordingly done, (in 1832, wo be
Hove,) his father providing for his sup
port at that time, and leaving $10,000 ii
his will, tho income from which wa
secured to Theodoro for life. That life
after thirty-eight years of imprisonmen
in what in the earlier days of his con
finement he was wont to call "a gooi
boarding house, but having some of th
biggest fools he ever saw as boarders,'
has just closed. For nearly thirty year
he was one of the most noted of tho in
mates, not only his proud descent, bu
his graceful manners and flow of cou
versation rendering him an object c
interest to all visitors. He labored unde
the hallucination that he was Georg
Washington, and waB fond of nssumin
the traditional attitudes of the Father c
his Country. At the occesionnl ball
given to tho inmates, (averaging som
500 in number,) he was always es
quisitely dressed in the style of bis daj
and was the beau par excellence.
Daring all these long years, despit
his general gentleness aud cheerfulues
of manner, he was restless and discoi
tented, and required close watching,
sever, in fact, having been considere
prudent to allow him to go out into tb
grounds without attendants. About tli
year 1860 his oondition began to gro
worse, and he soon after became dcmei
ted, continuing in hopeless idiocy unt
a few days since, when death, great?
