Thomas hoped he did; boped he hadn't
been four years in the army without
learning that much.
And so Thomas was left on guard, and
the rich banker, who had out-stayed all
his clerks this evening, took his de?
parture.
Mr. Thornton was a widower, having
an only eon, whom he had set his heart
on marrying to a ward of bis, a young
heiress, whoso fortune had lost nothing
under his management, the fruits of
which he wonld have been loth to see
reaped by a stranger.
But Mary Burton had a will, as well as
a heart of her own, and naturally felt
that the former was entitled to some
share in the disposal of the latter. Sbo
esteemed Edward Thornton, but nh o
both loved and esteemed Lawrence Ridge
ly, and that made a mighty difference.
As for the young men, they were both
her adorers, though Edward knew bis
snit was hopeless, and had long ceased
io press it. There was even a warm
friendship between himself and his riva).
They had been class-mates aud com?
panions in the days when Lawrence
Ridgeley's father was a prosperous mer?
chant, whose son was little likely ever to
be under the necessity of earning his
bread, as he was now doing, in tho po?
sition of a hard-worked clerk in the
banking houso of Abel Thornton.
That gentleman, we have said, had sot
his heart on the marriage of bis son to
his ward, and he was not slow in disco?
vering that Lawrence Bidgely was a se?
rious impediment to his plaDS-an im?
pediment which he would have gladly
removed without being over-Bcrupulous
as to the means, for he was a hard and
cruel man to those whom he conceived
to stand in his way.
Before Lawrence Ridgely left tho bauk
on the evening in question, ho received
directions from Mr. Thornton to meet
the latter in his library, after tea, to as?
sist in the preparation of some foreign
correspondence to go out by next day's
steamer.
The young clerk was on hand at thc
appointed time. He wrote, nt his em?
ployer's dictation, till a late hour, when
it became necessary to tho further pro?
gress of their work, to consult some
papers, which Mr. Thornton remember?
ed he had left on the desk in his private
room at the bank.
As there was no getting on without
the absent papers, Ridgeley offered tc
go and bring them. Mr. Thornton ap?
peared pleased with his promptness, and
apologized with unusual civility for ac?
cepting the offer.
Lawrence at once set out on his er?
rand. He was wailing at a crossing for
the next street-car, when Edward Thorn?
ton accosted him:
"Whioh way so late?"
"I am going to tho bank," said Law?
rence, "for a package of papers
which your father wishes to consult to?
night."
"Ah! that reminds me-I will nave
you the trip, with your permission. ]
forgot a parcel there this afternoon which
I will need in ihn morning; so, if yon
will tell me where the papers aro to be
found, I will do your errand and mine
at the same time."
"But I could bring your parcel."
"Yon would never be ablo to find it,
or to know it if yon did; I'm tho worst
possible band at descriptions and dircc
tiona. So give me the door-key, and tel

A short walk brought him to one of
those beautiful eon ares, which, here and
there, like oasbd in a desert, relieve the
monotony of this peopled wilderness.
The walks were now quite deserted, nnd
everything was still, save the murmur
of a fountain, whoso dancing spray, as
it sparkled in the shimmering light, de?
veloped a series of tints, varied ns tho
hues of hope and changeless only in their
beauty.
pA.ll lovers are poetic. No wondor,
tuen, that Lawrence Ridgeley, under the
enchantment of such a scene, sat and
dreamed away an hour before he had
thought it well begun. But the striking
of a clock recalled him from his rovory,
and ho knew it was time to return to his
employer, who, he feared, had already
been kept waiting.
Mr. Thornton met him with a lowering
and sinister look, iu which a tinge of
disappointment waa visible.
..Well, have you brought the paper?
You have taken your time, nt least."
..I have not been at the bank, sir;

Mr. Thornton's face was like marble.
"Edward! what of Edward?" he ex?
claimed, frantio with excitement.
Lawrence briefly explained how it had
happened that Edward had gone to the
bank in his stead.
Simple as was the recital, tho listener
seemed paralyzed at it. He clutched at
tho nearest object for support. Then
recovering himself with a desperate
effort, ho rushed toward tho door; but
before reaching it, his steps wero arrest?
ed by a violent ringing of the bell.
"Great God!" he cried, "it is too
late!" And he sank shivering into a
seat, and covered his face with his
hands.
Lawrence opened the door, and a
stranger presented himself.
"Can I seo Mr. Thorutou?" he in?
quired.
Lawrence conducted him to his em?
ployer's presence.
"I bring you sad news, Mr. Thorn?
ton."
But tho messenger might have ?pared
himself tho trouble of telling it. Nono
knew better than Abel Thornton that
tho snare which he had spread for
another's life had proved destructive to
that of his child. He had intended that
Lawrence Ridgeley, entering the bank
at an unseasonable hour, without know?

are ever present to haunt his waking,
and still more horribly to torment his
sleeping hours.
