It never occurred to me at the time
that there was no need to mako him in?
sensible in order to elude him. The
darkness would have rendered my pre?
sence :invi&iblo to him. But my minti
waa hopelessly cou f used. I wan breath?
ing a sulphurous. air, made thick and
difficult by its blackness. My only
thought waa to keep the ruffian down. I
waa only capable, indeed, of this
thought. - A few minutes hud elapsed,
when I heard a distant rumbling, h kr
approaching thunder. It increused. I
seemed to feel a wind blowing against
my fuco. I tasted, too, a continuous
draught of smoke and steam. 1 kuew
that a train was approaching, and my
bair lifted on my head. What mils were
We on? -The suspense was frightful. My
assailant increased his struggles. Hf
became furious. He was evideutly fight?
ing^ throw nu down, and over in the
direction of that side of the tunnel
along wliich came the roar of tho train
I?liw his object, and madly pressed upon
bim. His body frantically writhed. He
twisted under me os if hu revolved upou
a pivot. He endeavored to shriek some
words to me, but my throttling grasp
made his voice uo more than a horrible
hoarseness. I saw the red nnd green
lights of tho engiue approaching. They
grew in size 'and luster witb a hideous
rapidity. There was a roar, a shower of
dust, a wind that struck me dowu like a
blow from a strong mao's fist; tlieu fol?
lowed the dying rattle, endiug in a dull
and sullen monti. I rose to my feet. I
crossed over to the wall, and, feeling
along it, took a walk with all tho speed
my sinking frame would suffer me to put
forth. How long I walked ? know not.
My passage seemed interminable. The
damp of the wall against which my baud
constantly pressed froze my blood. Now
and then I stumbled over piles of rub?
bish lying grouped against tho Bide; aud
sometimes my groping was bewildered
by my coming across recesses into which
my hands guided me.
At length I saw a star, tremulous, glo?
rious, io the distance. It wu? daylight:
the aperture of the tunnel, and I pushed
forward with invigorated spirits. I neared
it slowly, for this Btar seemed to nunn
tain au inexorable- distance, and would
not enlarge. How shall I describe my
joy as I gained the twilight of its reflec?
tion-as I advanced and felt the pure air
of heaven upon my dry cheeks and burn?
ing lips-I saw the blue sky und Hie dim
vista of pale, green banks! As I gut
into the light, a cry escaped my lips.
My trowsers were splashed with blood.
There was one ensanguined line, ns if ti
fountain of blood had played upou me.
I seated myself to recover my strength.
I could see that I presented n dismal and
terrible speotacle. My coat was toro,
my bands were black-so, too, I judged,
was my face-my collar had been tom
from me, and the skin ut tho ends of m y
fingers had been lacerated. After re?
posing myself, I climbed tho hank, ami
perceived at the distance of ubout a mih
a small station.* I made toward it and
gained it. A railway official, who wat
standing looking at two children playing
in aback gurdon, uttered n loud cry ol
alarm ns he spied me. I narrated mj
story to him as coherently as I could,
and' then snuk upon the ground in i
fainting condition.
Of what happened after this, I hav<
no remembrance. When I came to mj
senses, I discovered thut I hud heel
taken to the bonne of tho station-mantel
and carefully tended by his wife. From
him 1 learnt tho conclusion of this sin
gular incident io my life. It seems thu
after my story had booti told, two met
were despatched into tho tunnel in searcl
of my assailant. They discovered hin
lying dead, with both bis legs cut cleat
off, a little above the knee. They bon
the corpse to the adjacent dead-house
and an inquiry into his death brough
ont particulars that aro easily anticip?t
ed. The man who so very closely re
sembled me at V-, had seduced tin
betrothed of a laborer, ono Theodon
Vertot. This Theodore, reckless now o
life, and resolutely bent on vengeance
swore to kill her seducer. Mistaking nu
for his enemy, heattemptcd to shoot me
This failing, be hung about tho hotel
armed with a stiletto, determined tostul
me, whenever I should appear on th'
street.
Hearing, however, that I WHS aboti
leaving for Puris, ho perceived a bette
and safer means of prosecuting his de
sign, by stabbing mo in the timmi
through which ho kuew wo would puss
and then escaping in the darkness. Kc
flection had obviously taught him thu
revenge would be nonti the less swoe
because it did uot eutail his dustructio
by the law.

of one's owu follies; it is nltogethe
