For a few moments he sat motionless, in
a brown study, then, putting spurs to bis
horde galloped baok homo. He met Karl,
walking, explained to him what had oc?
curred, ?rid; not long after, was driving J
furiously iu tho direction indicated by
the negro hoy. After traveling about
half the distance, bo mot his nncle, and
fonnd things were not quite so bad as
the messenger had represented. They
returbed'home as quickly as < possible,
bnt it was already late, and by tho time
they reached tho village, Theodore was
surprised to see the distant lights, still
gleaming brightly from tbe honse which
hold hi? treasure. The temptation was
irresistible; so, instead of going home,
ho proceeded at once to Mr. Clay burn's.
Long before he reached the place, he
heard'the sounds of unusual revelry, and
then he remembered that the plantation
negroes nero having a dance, in honor
of Juliet's wedding. In vain he called
for some one to take his horse, the loud
laughter'and dancing and music drowned
every other Sound. "They wouldn't
hear a cannon fire," muttered Theodore,
fastening his own horse. Lightly he ran
np the steps. It was a "warm spell," as
the Southerners call it-a taste of May
in December, and this evening boin g so
balmy, the windows were raised. Voices
came to'his ear from the parlor. "I'll
peep in and see what Juliet is doing,"
he thought, puttiug the thought into
immediate execution. Merciful Heaven !
what was the sight that greeted him!
Karl was kueeling beside Juliet-his
arms around her-her head pillowed on
his breast., The sight almost struck him
blind. Could he believe bis own senses?
He looked again. This time be was kiss?
ing her. Karl's voice reached him.
What were the words?
"Liebchen/ My own Julie!"
He could doubt no longer. He stag?
gered back, groping his way like a blind
man to the steps. There he sat down
his joy turned to wormwood and gall.
This was the woman he idolized, then
the woman who, on the morrow, WAS io
have become his wife; this the friend,
who for years had been more thun a
brother to him; this the end of that
blissful dream which he had cherished
with euch intoxicating delight. Would
fo God he had died before witnessing
this scene 1
For a long time-he never knew how
long-Theodore eat with his face buried
in his hands-motionless as a stone. His
mind was in a state of chaotic confusion.
After he recovered from the first stun?
ning sensation, his mood began to
ohacge. Ho ground his teeth and
clenched his hands, muttering torrible
imprecations between his compressed
lips. Now he felt only hatred, revenge,
which he swore should be speedily ac?
complished. Suddenly he sprang up
and mado his wap into thu honse. His
face wa? haggard and deadly pale, and
his mouth bore the grim shadow of a
dark and unalterable determination.

the busy brain of our heroine? She
thought of that other bridal day, per?
haps, and the1 bridegroom who never
came. Who knows? Snoh remem?

Juliet arose, for She felt sure it was Karl,
and that the momentous hour of that
promised interview had arrived. Bat
yet she lingered nnd lingered, hoping
Stephen would not be able to find her
that something would happen to delay
the dreaded occasion. Reader, have you
never done tho same-never felt this
shrinking sickness at the heart? But po
one came near her, until at last Juliet
began to wonder why she was not called.
She left her room, and, going down
stairs, met Hetty in the hall, asking her
who was'in the parlor.
"Mr. von Oppenheim," was tho an?
swer.
"And who is with him?"
"Master," said Hetty; "He asked for
Master, and he's beeb in there with him
ever since be came."
Iiost in astonishment at this piece of
intelligence, Juliet went into the sitting
room, trying to calm her mind by read?
ing But this she found impossible, so
she paced the room until she beard her
father's voice in the entry, calling her
name.
"Here I am, father," she said, appear?
ing in'the hall.
"Go in the. parlor," he said, and,
without another word, left the house.
At last, she mastered her agitation,
and, with forced calmness, entered the
room, where Bat Karl von Oppenheim.
They shook banda silently.
"You bave granted me this interview,"
began Karl, evidently much discom?
posed, "in order that I may explain
what must have seemed to yon most
villainous conduct in the past. I con?
fess, it is the most trying moment of my
life. ' I confess, I would not wish my
deadliest enemy to pass through a more
bitter or humiliating ordeal. Juliet, if
you ever loved me-if you ever had faith
in me, by that faith and that love, I con?
jure you to believe in the sincerity of my
confessions, tho magnitude of my re?
morse-tho strength of my repentance.
