FOETUSES OF JULIET CLAYBURN.
CHAPTER HI-M)s. LYLE ANT> HIS COUSIN
DISCUSS PABT EVENTS.'
VI bo lovoly lady Ch ria tab ol
Wbom hor father lovca so well.- Coleridge.
"Come over I ?f conreo I will, I'll be
certain to dc it; but not to sit in ono cor?
ner aud nrgue any educational doctrines
with joni There's moro attractive metal.
I'll talk to your lovely daughter, worthy
cir. By the thron o of Jupiter, isn't she
a-a-seraph? ' Angels aro too common
-^alie's a seraph 1 ' Education indeed 1 I
don't care ? dimo for edooatiuu, aud as
for Grecians and Bernaus, to my mind,
Juliot Clay bit rh is worth more Cicero's,
"Plato's and Xeuophon'u than could AU
universal apace,. and moro gods, god
?deasefi, demi-gode, muses, heroes, and
graces, than ever lived, or sung, or
reigned, or fought, or bled! Education
indeed! My mind is settled on that
point. At thu* moment, I think a for?
eign education despicable, because, for?
sooth, it has banished ruo so many years
from, her presonco. Eagonia, think what
might be now; had I been his ward," and
Mr. Lyle, withdrawing bis eyes from that |
minuto speck on tho landscape, which
looked liko a carriage, caught his cousin
in au enthusiastic embrace, which, for
affectionate ??? d?monstration, might be
compared to tho lusty hug ot a polar
. beer. 1 . : : ..
"Let mo go-lot me go, . Theodore I"
cried the astonished Miss Iiawleigb,
"I've something to tell yon."
When Mr. Lylo heard the lost phrase,
ho released tho lady's person from the
tenacious grasp in which she was held,
and demanded to know what she had to
say for herself.
"Now, was there ever snob a wioked
fellow?" asked Eugenia, in well-assumed
indignation. '-'Just seo how yon have
rumpled my hair, boiled my dress,
crushed my bonnet, and crumpled the
fresh trimming on my paletot. I'll not
have a word to say to youl"
"Then look out for another hug," said
Mr. Lyle, threateningly, which had the
desired effect of loosening the lady's
tongue.
"Theodore," she began, gravely,
smoothing her disordered dress, "you
moat not banter Juliet aboat Harry Bab?
bitt, nor speak to berso frequently about
Ashburn. She must necessarily have
very painful associations connected with
his nume abd with the place./" Tho first
slimmer she returned homo from echool,
Harry came to Bee her. I will not say
they were absolutely engaged, for Juliet
never confided the foots to me; but the
supposition, from subsequent events, is,
that that they were, and, for some time,
without the knowledge of her father.
"Wheo Mr. Clayburn tried to force Juliet
to marry her cousin Frank Clayborn
?ou know Frank? He is now engaged to
(lancho Babbitt-she acknowledged her
??rt>?erenoe for Harry. Her father went
nto a furious passion-there was quite a
scene-at last he told her, in the most
cruel manner, that she mnst either leave
his house forever, a disinherited child,
or resign Harry and marry Frank. Ju?
liet's muid, a very intelligent girl, heard
all the conversation and told me about
it; so I am stating facts, and not mere
rumor. Juliet persisted in her allegiance
to Harry, refused to give him up, left her
father's house and, for a few days, sought
refaga with me. She was on her way to
Ashburn, to her aunt's, when recalled by
a note from her father, stating that her
mother was dying. (She died in four
days after Ju Hot reached home."
"Ouu it be trae?" said the gentleman,
admiringly. "Well, I've heard and read
of oocBiancy, times without number, but |
this is the first well-authenticated exam
?le of it which has eyer come within my
howledge. And her mother died so
soon after, you say? How bitterly she
must have felt the stroke."
. "It almost killed her," said his cousin,
"she hak never been the same joyous
creature since."
Eugenia proceeded to givo bim
minute account of her si ok nos s and the
events conneoted with it, and how they
had left Orkney, after tho unfortunate
occurrence, and never returned until
the present ooaasion. Mr. Lylo seemed
deeply interested in the narrative, and
after abo ceased to speak, romaincd pro?
foundly silent for several moments.
Suddenly he exclaimed :
"But. Eugenia, there's o strange dis?
crepancy between yonr statements con?
cerning Harry Babbitt and those mad?
to me by Eugenia von Oppenheim. J
did not recollect it for the moment, but
now the remembrance is vivid, that on
one occasion, I beard Madam von Op?
penheim Bay sho had received a letter
from her uncle, telling of Juliet's en?
gagement to Frank, and that sho had
discarded Harry Babbitt. How can
yon reconcile this with your account?"
"I tell you she did not reject Harry,"
cried Eugenia, impatiently, "at least,
not at that time. I ought to know more
about it than Madam von Oppenheim,
or nil the Von Oppeuheims put together,
for I was here where it all took place.
Mr. Clayburn no doubt thought she had,
but they wcro boorotly engaged all tho
timo."
"I cannot beliovo it," pronounced
Mr. Lyle, with a negativo shake of tho
know ali that ocourrod, nor what excuses
poor Juliet had. ', Bat Ibero was a secret
engagement, I.know. I discovered it in
thia way: Juliet was playing the piano
for me one day, when I perceived she
wore a diamond ring-very beautiful and
very peculiar. We have been so inti?
mate from childhood, I did not hesitate
to speak of it. 'Juliet,' I asked, 'is that
your engagement ring?' , 'Yes,' was tho
scarcely audible reply. 'Frank, of
course?' I interrogated. Heaven knows
what put it in ruy head to ask the ques?
tion, for a doubt'neverentered my mind.
She became dreadfully confused und
answered 'No.* I was surprised
shocked. 'Take care, my friend,' I
said gravely; 'you will get yonmelf into
trouble.' She threw her arms around
my neck and wept in a heart-broken
way. 'I am in trouble already,' she Baid.
'Do not ask me now, Eugenia-I cannot
tell you-but love me-lam very misera?
ble.'. This happened just after Mr.
Babbitt's visit. Of courso, I under?
stood subsequent events, without any
explanation. When her father found it
out, and banished her from home, sh?
wrote me a note, saying she had had a
misunderstanding with her father con?
cerning her cousin, ' and begging me to
take ber in for a few days. The sub?
ject is so painful to her-I never allude
to it in any way. It annoyed me so to?
day when you persisted in speaking of
Ashburn, and rallied her about. Harry.
Did you not perceive how embarrassed
and nervous sho became?"
"Ot course I did. I felt intuitively I
was blindly transgressing in some way,
but I could not tell how. What a brute
She must think me? That is why the
feverish color oame and went in her
face st* constantly. Did you notice,
when I spoke of the flower, and her
wishing to give it to some one else, how
her cheeks glowed like the flame of a
fitful torch. She is very beautiful
lovelier even than when I saw her at
Ashburn. She has ohanged somehow
not so much in feature, for that is the
same-but there is a nameless some?
thing, an indefinable softness and oharm
about the face, which it never possessed
to such a degree before. I think it is
only the expression which has ohanged
it was joyous then; it is subdued, ele?
vated, sublimely pensive now. Her
cheek has the same rounded outline, the
same warm, delicate hue; bat even when
in the brightest spirits, there always
seems to be a shadowy glimmering of
thought, in the soft glance of the dark,
wistful eye,
'As if in dreams some visioned woo
Had brok tho Elysium of tho sleeper.'"
