twenty years previous to any di root mea?
sure against the slave trade by either
Great Britain or the United States. In
1860, the two races stood-colored,
412,820; white 291,388. In 1869, tLe
two races stood-colored, 886,139; white,
274,962. The writer very reasonably
attributes the decrease in the white race
to the war and r opposes the colored race
by deaths since the war, growing ont of
the want of proper food, clothing and
medical attendance. If thin be the true
supposition and the registry of deaths in
Charleston appears to corroborate it, the
colored race is rapidly passing away.
The writer, however, has permitted a
canse of large deoresse in the negro
Eop ula t iou of Sooth Carolina to escape
im; and this is migration to Georgia.
In spite of the "bloody Ku Klux," large
numbers of "Kalinas" have migrated to
Georgia, preferring the hazards of Geor?
gia Kn Klux, than to risk their liven at
their old homesteads ander carpet-bagger

keeper announced, 'Message from the
House,' and Miss Mary E. Spencer, en?

and modestly said: 'Mr. President.' That
officer replied, 'Miss Clerk,' and Miss
Spencer proceeded to read, in a clear and
distinct voice, a message from the House
in relation to certain bills which had
passed that body. At the conclusion of
the message the Senators approved of
this first official act performed by a wo?
man in the Iown Senate, by a general
clapping of hands."

State Dental Association.
SOME doubt having been expressed as to
the success of the State Dental Associa
tion, formed in Columbia during the week of
the Agricultural Fair, upon tho ground that
sufficient notice had not been extended to the
profession throughout the State, the members
of the Association then formed do, therefore,
wave all former action, and hereby extend an
earnest invitation to the members of tho pro?
fession in South Carolina to meet in Columbia,
on TUESDAY, April 5th, at 8 o'clock P. M., for
the formation of a Dental Association that will
embrace all sections of tho State.
The Southern Dental Association meets in
New Orleans on tho 13th of April next. The
American Association meets in Nashville on
the 1st Tuesday in August. At tho former of
these, at least, South Carolina should be repre?
sented. Will sho stand off?
